A few thoughts regarding our forum customs

Post by AmBraCol »

From the beginning this forum was set up as a place where friends with like minds could meet to "discuss everything, politely", with the central focus of interest being on our mutual appreciation for the under lever repeating rifle in its multitudinous manifestations. Over the years the group has grown from the couple dozen or so initial members to the 4,000 or so people currently registered as members. In any such gathering there will, by human nature, be representatives of a wide variety of political and social strata. It is the goal of the forum management to maintain the original focus of the forum, a place where leverguns and just about anything else can be discussed - politely. Also in any such group there will be certain individuals who do not desire to adhere to the community rules and who apparently gain some sort of personal titillation through antagonistic behavior. This behavior manifests itself in diverse ways, from inappropriate to the forum topics to personal attacks and baiting or bullying of other members. It is not the forum management's desire to micromanage each and every discussion nor is it in our power to ensure that everyone always is on their best behavior and that no one's feelings are hurt or sensibilities are violated. It is, however, well within the scope of our duty and ability to prune that which we deem to be offensive to the good taste and community values which have been part of this forum from the beginning. There are multitudinous shooting related sites on the world wide web, many of which allow just about any language and attitude and many of which are run by folks who abide no contrary view to their own. Our goal is to align ourself with neither extreme but rather to foment an atmosphere in which diverse opinions may be aired - but only within the guidelines clearly posted on the main page of this forum.
This is a high-class place so act respectable. We discuss most anything here ... politely.
At times our actions may appear to be arbitrary to those who are not familiar with the longstanding history of the forum. But this is a private forum which is supplied via the courtesy of various individuals who have entrusted the management of the place to two moderators. We are not perfect, but we are what you've got.

Now, today I had a bit of free time and typed up the paragraphs prior to this one in a light hearted mood (believe it or not). Basically it's just one of those season calls to "Lighten up, guys!" There've been too many personal clashes lately. If you don't like someone, skip their posts. Life as you know it will NOT end if you ignore them. In fact, it'll be good for your blood pressure to simply bypass individuals who rub you the wrong way.

So, moving right along, my range trip for the week got scrapped by the call of duty. What are YOU guys up to this weekend?

Thanks Paul, we can all use a reminder occasionally.

As far as the weekend, I'm planning on hitting the range first thing in the morning! It's going to be another hot one, so I doubt I'll do much else outside.

Yeah, it's horribly hot around here too. Highs clear up in the mid 80's! Thank God it cooled off last night to about 60 or so. We'll see what the day brings forth as to livable temperatures today. :)

A reminder now and again is not a bad thing, especially as we grow in number :D :D

As for this weekend, tomorrow we are having a birthday bash in the back yard for my grand daughter who will be eight! :D :D

Sunday is recovery day :D :D :D

Aaah,,, grandkids. If I'd known they were this much fun I'd have had them first! ;-) Ours turn 2 in October, twins, boy and girl. My how time flies. Second son tells us it's going to be a while before he and his new bride expand the tribe. That's fine, they are young and so are we. :)

Paul,

The personalities you mentioned are everywhere, in every group, at work, at church, in the military. You can't get away from them. Sometimes you just can't ignore them either.
I try, really I do. But sometimes .......... well ignoring them just makes it worse. Anyway, we do appreciate the work you and Hobie do. I sometimes think though you guys need a third hand to step in when you're otherwise occupied. We are a small forum compared to some, but as you pointed out there are a lot of us here.

For this weekend I'm working on loading up some 30-30s with the bullets I got recently. I was planning on going to the outdoor range this, but I'm short on gas and the money to buy it. The range is pretty close to 90 miles round trip. My wife pointed out to me that every year on our birthdays we're always broke.
Must be a conspiracy.

Thanks again for the reminder Paul.

Wish I WAS up to something this weekend... waiting to hear about a new job, and waiting for current work to call me up... Would like to get out and shoot this weekend, but work... no, let me rephrase, bills require I get back at it. Been icing the elbow for the last three days... and workin' on organizing the library... And since that's scattered all over the house... it's going to wait until the next time I come home!!!

A reminder to play nice in the sandbox is warranted from time to time for sure, but I have to be honest with you and say that after trolling the forum rather faithfully for some time now there often seems to be one particular member at the center of the average fracas. Statistics are strange things (figures lie and liars figure...) but eventually it gets to the point that the one nail that's rather obviously standing up needs to get hammered back down.

The occasionally unpleasant job of the forum moderator (been there, done that).

Thanks for the great forum,

the anonymity of the internet makes it all too easy for people to write things they would never say to another person's face.

the next error is projecting personal feelings into someone else's writing.

Now that is what causes trouble Paul, I just came in from outside and the thermometer reads 105F. You don't have to rub it in :D . As for the weekend, my wife and I will be going out to dinner Saturday evening to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary, which is actually Sunday. And I'm going to try and squeeze some hog hunting in sometime also.

Thanks for the reminder on our posts. I must say that the reason I allowed Y2K to join this forum, with permission from the moderators, at the tender age of 11 is that the members here have proven to be respectful, courteous, patriotic and just all-around good folks. Sure, every now and again there is a heated exchange, but nothing I would be worried about my son catching (not that he has a lot of time to spend on the web). This is simply the finest place on the internet, bar none! :D

On an airplane right now flying back home after a business trip out west. Going to do battle with the weeds in the yard all day tomorrow. Don't care how hot it gets; I'm losing that war right now, and if I don't launch a strategic counter-attack here soon, all hope will be lost.

Wish me luck!!!

Thanks for the reminder Paul. I appreciate the general tenor of the conversations going on within the forum; it's a good place. Much of the quality is due to the hard work put in by you and Hobie. Knowledgeable members also help!

Weekend plans include taking a bunch of stuff--a raft, backpacks, fishing rod holders, etc. to a friend's garage sale. This stuff has been taking up too much space in my garage!! I'm dealin' cheap and wish some of you folks could come on by. Sunday I'll take the birddog out for a little conditioning hike-season opens here on the 1st of September.

Well said.

I plan to try out a new-old (1951) Marlin 35 Rem I just bought. If I can get past the brutal recoil and stunning muzzle blast I'll see if I can hit the paper.

Man I wish that work would let me hit the weeds with a stategic counter attack. But lately I have been having to stay up till at least 1:30 am to see that the next days work gets done. It will get better soon (I Hope) but ... It will be at least a week more. Already been most of a month. 12+ hour days for over a month drag a man down pretty quickly. :(

I think it was a great decision to try and keep the politics out of the General Discussion. Nothing ruins it faster for me than stumbling into a political comment.

Good reminders for civil discourse.
Here in central Arizona it's a sizzling 110 today (Friday) heading for 111 then 112, maybe beyond this weekend. But it's, as they say, a "dry heat." A popular phrase about us but this time they're not kidding, with the humidity hovering around 7-8% in Phoenix, as low as 3% I think I heard somewhere else in the state. In any event, after 110, it's just plain hot, but I still wouldn't trade it for any of the 105s and 106s I've heard of in the midwest, east and south recently. So...this weekend? Staying indoors and cooling it!

Ya know, my politics are to the right of Attila the hun, on a different forum are a couple of real bush hating lefties. We had many a racous discussion before Clinton came in. Now I would really like to meet this guy and have brew with him. Will I turn him into another me, no, and I seriously doubt that he thinks he will convert me. The point is, that if your mind is so narrow that you cannot discuss and debate ideas with some one who is not like you, I pity you. If you are so predjuiced that you cannot have some fun debating ideas, you probably dont have much a life in the first place, and are not able to expand your own self to recognize that others just might, might mind you, have something useful to offer.

Read all of what is said on any post that is in your field of interest. If you agree, great. If you dont, say why in a dignified way. You just might learn something. More importantly, you just might TEACH something, or improve the safty in our admittidly some time dangerous hobby.

If you dont WANT to learn something possibly new and mind expanding, okay, but please keep away from me and others who are at least open to discussion.
