OT- Mauser
I'm sitting here thinking Mausers and was wondering which current/recent models use the Mauser action for their rifles?
I've been looking at them and mostly found surplus guns in the usual, 6.5/7/8mm. I kinda like the idea of something newer and in a different caliber, like a magnum of some kind.
I am just thinking(typing) out loud here.....

I respectfully have to disagree with my friend J.R. about the Remington being "close" to original as they did change the design for cost reasons.
The Winchesters-well, you can't go wrong with a Model 70!
I just checked Remington's website for their 798 rifles. This is what I got:
"We have carefully reworked every aspect of these rifles to meet the tastes and performance demands of today’s hunter and shooter. And this year, we’re offering the Model 798™ Safari chambered in the venerable 375 h&h and 458 Win Mag. Built around a long-action Mauser 98, it’s your ticket to dropping the toughest game on earth. Its Realwood™ walnut laminate stock combines the enduring stability and toughness of lamination with the classic good looks of highly figured walnut. This striking woodwork accented by a richly blued barrel and receiver.
Yeah, right!
Do your self a favor and Look at the CZ 550 line. A true '98 "magnum" length action with honest to God real walnut and bluing, or laminates if you prefer.
I have one in 375 H&H converted to H&H AI, and it is one of the most accurate guns I own. Just ask Old Savage! The stocks are more robust, and they hold more rounds in the mag then any of their competitors. They come from the factory with a premium recoild pad too!

The Ruger M77 is pure Mauser as well.
I think the two main things that say Mauser more than anything else are
1) controled round feed
2) large claw extractor
Winchester and Remington have neither of these except the 798 which is also pure Mauser.
Basicaly if you want to know if it's Mauser look at the bolt and if you see the large extractor running down the outside of the bolt you're in.
I've had my eye on the CZ Manlicher in .223. I just can't get past that ugly external detachable magazine. It just ruins the whole thing for me.

I don't agree regarding the Ruger, unless I am mistaken, and not remembering correctly, the extractor on the Ruger is simular to a mauser in looks, but is not a true mauser extractor, because it is not controlled round feed and will snap over the case head. Also the trigger is totally different. At least the extractor is a strong one, much stronger then the Remington 700, although, I must admit, I have never had much trouble with the tiny 700 extractor, as long as I wasn't dealing with a stuck case that is.Rusty wrote:The Ruger M77 is pure Mauser as well.

Also, the Winchester is a controlled round feed, regarding the Classic pre-64 version, so it it very much like a mauser.
LIke you, I have trouble getting past the ugly magazines on the CZ's, and their stocks are too boxie and oversized on many of their guns.
I own a 'Kodiak' , it is a Mauser action '98' made in USA ( CT ? )
It has a USA made barrel (30-06) and stock ( Maple , with some birds eye )
My opinion, Action is too loose for a good second shot,
My Hunting friends Ruger is a much better rifle..
But, If I want to roll in the mud with the gun, than i'm told the Mauser is better.

I recently traded off an H&R Model 300 Ultra Rifle in 30-06. These were sold probably 35 years ago. They were built in the U.S. on a F.N. Mauser action. These were a long action in standard cartridges, they may have gone up to 300 Win. Mag., I'm not sure. Mine was a light weight sporter with the high gloss, roll over cheek piece, and white line spacers. I traded it for a new levergun. If I was set on a new 98, I would check out the CZs.

Guess what ? I bought a new .22 Hornet CZ-527 Lux, because it was cheap, and since no one else would buy it in the ten months it sat on a gun shop rack.
Everyone had that same comment, but I bought it before it had a birthday there.
THEN, I had a local (Massachussets) specialist rework the protruding magazine to a flush fit, removing the triangular web in front of the trigger guard in the process. It was the best $60 I'd spent in a long while - and, if I feel the need for more magazine capacity (I don't), the standard mags still fit/work.

The Kimber model 8400 is a nice Mauser design

The Dakota model 76 is also a very nice Mauser based action

Don't forget that there are tons of sporters out there made from mauser and springfield actions in many different cals. that can be picked up cheap.
I've had a bunch in many different calibers and not a bummer in the batch. The good ones aren't as cheap as they used to be but with a little searching you can find some good stuff! I had a beautiful 98k that had been rebarreled to .257 Roberts. Was a super shooter and I stupidly traded it off for something I can't even remember.

If you look in a book on Mausers, one of the first things they'll tell you is to always make sure you load the cartridge into the magazine so that the bolt can pick it up and this allows the rim to slip under the extractor. If you don't the bolt will jam the case into the chamber and you'll have a heck of a time getting the case out. A lot of builders saw this as a disadvantage so they modified the extractor so it will slip over the rim if it's not done right.
I don't know what kind of a test you would do to determine if a rifle would be considered controlled feed. Personally I'm not sure it's that big an issue any more. It might have just been something for the gun writers to write about 50 years ago.
