The Jeep Gun Perfected

Post by jeepnik »

From time to time I have mentioned that I have developed the perfect "Jeep" gun. For many years, a Charter Arms AR-7 was my jeep gun. But after a while, I figured out it was a bit "light" for some uses. I began my search anew. Turned out I had the makings of the perfect jeep gun right in my safe.

My first shotgun was a .410 Mossberg 500. Seeing it gave me the idea. By shortening the barrel, and putting on a short synthetic buttstock, I ended up with a trim and nicely balanced gun. And let's face it, the .410 is alot more versatile than the .22 lr, great as it is.

A fellow on another forum ask for pictures, and since I finally got around to taking some, I figured I'd post a couple here.

The first shows the two disassembled. You'll notice that the AR-7 is a bit shorter what with it fitting into the buttstock, but it is a bit more rotund. And, it's lighter by a bit (but it's a jeep gun, not a backpack gun).

The second photo shows them assembled.

Assembly time is about equal. The buttcap on the AR-7 is a friction fit. In order to make the pad on the end of the shotgun buttstock easily removable, it is held in place by velcro. I have a slip on sling that works on either. The thing must be darned near thirty years old and is still going strong.

Good idea!!!

What does your AR-7 "like". Mine has always been a bit finicky, and I still haven't discovered what she'll consume reliably.

CCI minimags are it's favorite. But mostly I've found my feed problems were magazine related. Tried several of the high cap type and it never fed a full magazine. If I stick with those from the manufacturer, it works pretty darned reliably. Well enough to take jacks on the run.

Can it take out the guy in the helicopter with a grenade in his hand? :D James Bond, aka Sean Connery, was the first person I ever saw use one. Are they as much fun to shoot as they look like?

Looks like a great idea. My brother has done something similar to break one down for carry on a motor cycle.

I do have a question, though. What is the advantage of removing the recoil pad on the 410, if it's not the the longest piece anyway? (For that matter, why keep a recoil pad on a 410?)

Nice guns. Back in the mid 80s I used to keep a CA AR-7 and a single shot .410 in the truck while on Ft Bragg.

I showed the recoil pad separated just to show the velcro. Normally when stored, it's stuck on the buttstock. Of course, the pad has to be "quick detachable" to reach the stock bolt. Takes less than a minute to assemble, load and be ready to fire.

And to the other poster, yep, the AR-7's are fun. Too bad none of the 30 round mags I tried were reliable, no that could really have been fun.

OK, I hadn't thought of that. Cool!

Cool.

My Jeep gun is an old used Glock 17 - and two extra mags.
