This auction is for a very nice Marlin 1889 Safety Lever chamber in 38-40 WCF. This is a very rare model because of it's 28" barrel, which only 2,260 were made compared to the 26" version where almost 40,000 were made. This gun is in good condition for it's age, the stock shows no cracks or repairs. There is a very light bulge about 4" from the end of the barrel where the factory gas relief is, but I understand this is common for the barrel. Most of the bluing is all there and shows normal wear marks. There is an eight inch spot on one of the flat sides of the octagon barrel where the blue has worn off, other than that the blue looks normal. Both the sight are original and functional. I would call this gun about 70% on the condition scale, conservatively. Must be sent to an FFL, this gun is available to all states. Payment by postal money order, or Visa/MC with a 3% charge. Buyer pays $25 insured shipping.
Maybe if you bought it, you could at least salvage it, by making it into the 'even rarer, 24-inch model'. . . 8)

Gas relief, wow, I didn't even know that the early Marlins broke wind. Glad that I learned that interesting historical bit.

Howdy Folks,
Matt replied with the following:

"I don't know why it was put there, but about 4 inches inside the barrel is a perfectly cut groove all the way around at the same spot on the outside of the barrel is a slight bulge, my guess is some sort of recoil reduction groove.

What you can learn by hanging out here! I'm going to get TWO of those groves cut in my Rossi .454 before hunting season.

Hmmm. Sehr interessant. Ich bin also beeindruckt mit dem Material, das Sie hier erlernen können. Abbildungen, benötigen wir Abbildungen!

I'd say it in English, but to get the right effect, I'd have to use non-appropriate language.

 :!: :?:

Astounding. Simply astounding.

If he inherited it and has never been around guns, I suppose it could be a hopeful guess on his part, or something someone else told him just to see if he'd believe it (or to sell him the gun).

If he's truly that unenlightened, that's one thing, but I'd like to see how many OTHER guns he's sold on that auction; if he's sold a bunch of others, or is actually much of a gun trader, there's no way he could believe that, unless. . .
