A Near Perfect Day!

Post by COSteve »

I decided to hit the range around noon today so I packed up my 2 leverguns and my Uberti SAA, my Glock 24 (40s&w), and both my 14.7" middy and 20" ARs, loaded up on ammo, and headed to our nearby range (10 minutes away). While it was warm there, we had a nice breeze that kept it comfortable. My leverguns rang the 300yds steel ( :D ) and my scoped 20" AR smacked the Ram's rear leg at 300yds ( :o ) so I knew things were going to be great. After a couple of hours having fun with all my toys I packed up for home.

At home while I was cleaning everything up, I decided that I needed some more 40s&w ammo so when I was done I set out to handload some. The 400rds I originally decided upon went so fast that I just kept going until my ammo box was full. In total, I handloaded 800rd of 40s&w today.

All in all, a great day!

I reload in decent quantities so my 650 w/casefeeder is a necessity. For instance, last weekend I reloaded 900rds 38spl+P on Friday and 700rds of 38spl+P on Sunday and this afternoon I did 800rds of 40s&w. The first session was 1½ hrs start to finish, the second was also 1½ hrs, and today's session was 1¾ hrs.

People ask all the time if reloading is worth it. In less than 6 hours of fun reloading over 3 days I used components costing me $271 but I made ammo that is valued at a minimum of $744 (40s&w value packs 8x$31=$248 + 38spl Blazer 32x$15.50=$496). Even though my handloaded ammo was tuned to each rifle and I consider it to be premium quality vs bargain ammo, I saved myself $473 for just a few hours work (except reloading isn't work at all to me but rather a separate hobby that I happen to make money at)!

I wish I could share your enthusiasm - I am going to need 40 rounds of 30-30 for next month's silhouette match and I know I will barely manage to find the time. I stopped going to the cowboy match in mid-month strictly due to the ammo requirements - I can't keep up with it (the match would require 80 rounds of centerfire and 40 of rimfire).

I do sort of like reloading once I get to it. It's like laundry, you moan and put it off but once you get started it's easy enough.

I find I have a little more energy for working on new loads than I do for increasing my stock. I tend to shoot up everything I have and not make any more until I'm completely out, and then I wait until the last minute to load more.

Maybe I should eat more pretzels.

I thought at first when I saw the title of your thread -- "A Near Perfect Day!" that you'd run across fifty or so more pretzel jars!! :) :P
