Five notches on the rifle stock...

Post by Technical Director »

In addition to leverguns, there's plethora of other types that show up at the gun range 100 yard bench. So the other day at the range, one of my range buddies had brought a couple of old surplus Mausers that he enjoys shooting. During a brief break on the bench, Joe showed me the five notches that were on the one Mauser stock when he bought the rifle. He shared with us that he speculated they might have been placed there by a WWII German soldier. Sounded reasonable, kinda like what one might find on old leverguns used during our wildwest time period. As we're getting ready to resume shooting and just about to call the range hot again, I looked over to Joe's Mauser with the bolt open. With the bolt all of the way back and chamber opened, I noticed that the back of the bolt contacted the stock, thus putting the notches in the stock. I pointed that out to Joe, and we all had a quick moment of stunned silence. A moment latter and with silly grins on all of our faces, the group of us all said that Joe's story of how the notches got there must be so and all swore an oath of secracy to not say otherwise  .

I try to tell myself that all the 'safe dings' and other 'stupidity' marks I've made on my guns are actually embellishments my great-grandchildren will swear happened when I was fighting bears or Indians or something heroic...

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Looks like a very good place to share and gain some more shooting related knowledge, plus various campfire stories. I was able to find this site via JohndeFresno, as we both belong to the same gun range. Also found out we share some of the same acquaintances. Great guy to be sharing the 100/200 yard range with. I'm looking forward to spending some future time on this forum.

Thanks again, Technical Director

Welcome aboard, TD!

It was, indeed, a pleasure to share the range with you. And your depth of experience, wit and good cheer are very welcome here. I was amazed that you immediately and correctly assessed that two pieces of electrical tape would raise the front of my scope mount to bring it dead on at 100 yards for that 30-30 load we were shooting - and that you had it and the scissors in your bag of tricks!

'Til next range session -

Technical Director,
Welcome to the forum! On the lighter side, your post reminded me of a Bob Hope movie I saw recently. As he is shooting down the bad guys (with help from some of our western heroes) he asked his assistant to notch the rifle stock......
