Winchester 1892 tooling and machinery

Post by slamfire »

I read somewhere that the original Winchester model 1892 tooling and machinery had been purchsed by Rossi, shipped to Brazil and used to manufacture their 92 copies. Can anyone substantiate or comment on this allegation? If true, does that mean that the pre-CNC Rossi rifles were made on old Winchester machinery? Just curious.

Some of the old and new Rossi parts will interchange but aren't dead on Winchester parts. Parts like the cart stop springs will. The carbine forearm woods will. The carbine butstock can be made to work. the rifle wood doesn't work. The Mag followers will kind of work. IIRC, the small one work but may protrude too much and hang the carrier once the tube is empty. The big does just the opposite. It works until you get to the last round and it may not push it in far enough to allow the bullet tip to clear as the carrier comes up. Or the reverse, the big one hangs the carrier and the little one hangs the bullet. That's also way I make make steel replacements for the plastic ones Rossi uses.
The original Win firing pins can be made to work. The Rossi levers will work in the original but the original lever needs to be slightly thinned to work in the Rossi.
None of the screws or threads interchange. There are several dimensional differences in the frames as well. Bottom line is Rossi may or may not have the original tooling, I don't know. But if they do they aint using them.
