The 32-20 and the Fox

Finally got out for a walk around with one of my 1892's. It is an old carbine that had a Sportco barrel fitted long before I bought it. Not a pretty gun, gumwood timber and plenty of signs of long use, but it shoots really well and is so light and handy that I love to carry it around the paddocks.

Anyway, I was looking for a pig but none were around and as it was getting late and I had an hour to walk back to the hut I decided to give my new Tenterfield fox whistle a try. I knew there was a little spring in the creek just below me and there is water there all year round, also plenty of cover from broken timber and blackberry. As good a spot as any to find a fox. I settled into a shadey spot against some yard posts to break up my outline and gave the whistle a couple of blows. Around a minute later this young Vixen came trotting along looking for an easy meal. She got to about 20 metres from me before she stopped and offered a good shot. Shot her just behind the shoulder and she spun in a couple of circles and then tried to walk off but only made it another 10 metres or so and dropped.

115 grain lead projectile (Hawkesbury River) and 11 grains of ADI AR2205.

I was hoping to shoot a fox or two with my "new to me" 218 Bee, but the 32-20 got the job done.

That is one fine hunting tale ! And a great old caliber to boot.
I have been shooting a 1873 in 32-20 for some time as my prime "crawling about the ditches and thickets" groundhog rifle. The 32-20 with home cast bullets is one of the finest up close dispatchers I have owned.

That's a great looking carbine in my favorite caliber. I have an old 1892 that I've had for over fifty years. right now my best 32wcf load is an 85 grain XTP over some 5744. Nice fox too.
