Bought a 94 AE cross bolt safety in 30-30 on gunbroker for a AI project gun. It had two different kinds of wood-a light colored stock with a non logo plastic but plate-probably a non win replacment?? The forend is a ranger type hardwood that probably came from Win-it fits nicely. It has a gold trigger?? The barrel has the normal markings, but the front sight is a tall dove tail fited in the barrel verses the ramp and dove tail. Serial no. is 6408xxx.
Makes me wonder if this wasn't a parts combo before I got it?? Was there a rifle with the barrel dove tail front sight and a gold trigger?? Could it been some kind or commerative with a different stock??
I have a ramline plastic fore end and stock that I planned on using to reduce weight for a light weight hunter. Also have wood parts if I change my mind. Just that this is different from my other 94's in the trigger and front sight.
Any input here from the vast knowledge available will be apreciated-Thanks

Re: win 94 project gun
First thing to do is get rid of the cross-bolt safety and the second would be a trigger/hammer swap for a half-cock style. There is a decription in the "One Sticky" on how to do that.
Fun stuff!

Re: win 94 project gun
Whether or not your gun is a parts gun is a fair question. Does it have the "half-cock" notch on the hammer? Most gold triggers I've seen were only on pre-rebounding hammer guns... So it wouldn't surprise me if your example hadn't already had the rebounding hammer removed. "Antiques", "Classics", although not standard guns, were not really commemoratives, yet they sported gold triggers and hammers, as well as spring covers (loading gates). And, unfortunately, many of them have been taken apart and sold as parts.
Some Ranger models I saw had dovetailed front sights like the Trappers, (sans ramps and hoods).

Re: win 94 project gun
Thanks for the info:
Unfortunatly there is no half cock-just the rebounding hammer and crossbolt safety. Actually have made the rebounding hammer livable for me by adjust ing the main spring hammer yolk to min rebound-just enough to get the first notch on the hammer-then do a minor spring reduction and reduce the hammer notch engagment for a crisp no creep terigger. Some of this from the Maurader(spelling?) sight, and some on my own The other crossbolt safety's I have have the saddle ring assy which protects the saftey from being bumped on.
Would be interested in the half cock swap, but haven't seen parts available.
Anyway the mechanics of the gun seem good with low action weare and I can see everything pointing to it being a restocked ranger-just that trigger?? I'll take a inner look at that when I take it apart.
Thanks again

Lots of parts on Gunbroker. A little more pricy than the old days when more were available on ebay, but they are there.
