Most Useful Levergun

I would have some different considerations, not living out in the country.

Most of my shooting is target shooting and the .357 or the .22 are both welcome at the indoor range. So I can shoot them every day if I want to. At the outdoor range, I can shoot the .357 out to 200 yards if I want to.

Both are also very good for silhouette, with the .357 being workable for two classes of cowboy silhouette.

Both are good for hunting, with the .357 being legal for big game or small game.

So I'd have to go with the .357. Funny, it was the first gun I bought.

My Savage 99 in .308 shoots bullets from 110 grain to 200 grain. Pointed tips are no problem because of box magazine.

There is a huge selection of factory ammo featuring any bullet type desired: boat tail or flat base, Premium or standard hunting bullets, even reduced recoil ammo.

Trajectory is nearly as flat as 270 out to 325 yards.

Personally, I use a shotgun for small game and protection. So, the main chore I have for a levergun is big game hunting. But, if its recoil is too much, then it won't get used as much. Therefore, my vote goes to the 336 35 Remington.

However, if I needed a levergun to "do it all", I would probably choose a 336 in 30-30.

New here, not new to guns of just about any make.

Its an interesting question, sort of like the ole 45LC VS 45ACP story the gunmags do every other year or so. But the truth is there are actually some factors worth considering.

For me. My Marlin 336xlr custom .35 is the most useful levergun I own. BUT its followed closely by my Winchester 94 "truck gun" 30-30. I wont mince words, I like the .35 caliber much more than the 30-30. But the ole Winny ther-tther-t has done its share of work.

i guess which ever you are most comfortable with and have the most ammo for any well made lever gun will get the job done.
