OK, so I think I am addicted....again!

Post by JohnB »

What is wrong with me?

I begin to think about less house and more land...I start researching Wyoming, Montana, Colorado...

Then I begin to watch Last American Cowboy religiously and dream of wide open spaces where my family can thrive in safety and within our means (we do now, but you know what I mean).

I become more and more traditionalist and conservative each day...

First, I buy a Marlin 336 in .30-30 and I begin the love affair...

Next, I inherit a Winchester 1873 in .32-20 and the love affair grows...

Now, I am looking for an SAA in .32-20 to match the Winny... and I seem to be hanging out around the "fire" a lot...

Where is this going to end? :)

Your on the right road :D Simply put, its what Henry David Thoreau said to do with one's life, "simplify, simplify, simplify".

Everything you add to your life that requires other people's attention (read--YOUR money) is another thorn on the road to happiness. Yes, living simple is addicting.

Living away from the worlds idiots, being self sufficent, all the time being as least dependable on modern goods as you can get all leads to a man sleeping 8 hours a night. :D

Winchesters & single action Colts are as simple as a gun gets as a dependable repeater.

Houses can really complicate matters. Back in the seventies, when my relatives were building 4,000 sq. foot houses, I had a 1500 sp. ft. rancher built, not including the 2 car garage and the basement. (my man caves :D )

While my relatives were buying Cadillacs and Lincolns, I was driving Ford pick-ups and Jeep Wranglers.

While my relatives were using credit cards, I was paying with cash.

Close to 40 years later, most are divorced. I'm still married. I live by the word, "simplicity"------------------Sixgun

You know, I teach advanced firearms stuff. I have ARs, AKs, and Glocks, because I like them as fighting guns, and most folks have them for personal defense. But, my favorite handgun is a 4" Model 29 .44 Magnum, and my favorite rifle is my Winchester Wrangler .44 Magnum. We live in a smaller house than we ever have, we're raising chickens and a garden for the first time, and we're looking at having more acerage. We want to have a place that our kids and grandkids can call HOME, where they know Grandma and Grandpa will always be.

As we get older, we realize what's important is what we give back, and what we leave behind when we're gone.

John,

You really don't have to worry until you start thinking and talking about selling your truck and replacing them with a team of mules and a wagon. At that point, you in a heap o' trouble boy!

Don't sweat it until then!

most of us have an appreciation of the open spaces, and the finer products of the past. We gun cranks tend to be rather conservative so it is no surprise that we like the thought of being able to spread out a bit and tend our own affairs with minimum intrusion by others. And where can one do that better than in the open spaces of the Old West?

If you want to head West and can afford to do so, why not? There is still lots of room, though water might be in short supply.

Unless you aer dead set on the high country, let me suggest you take a good, long, hard look at the desert country of Arizona and New Mexico. It has a rugged beauty that I find most appealing. And for high country, you'd have a hard time finding better places than Northern New Mexico. I'd move to either area tomorrow if I could.

BTW, the next stage of your addiction will probably be blackpowder. Don't try to resist, just enjoy the wonderful smells and the melodic booms. Smokeless powder is just a passing fad anyway.

FWIW, all my rifles have levers (or ramrods), most of my handguns cylinders, and most of those have to be cocked for each shot.

There's one in the classifieds here ... jdad has it up for auction.
