Wow!! That "Armorer" guy was a 1st Class Pompous Equine Derriere!!!! I've always got good info here, even when asking a question about something "questionable" like spin cocking a 92!! The answers were straight and honest.. that's why I come HERE! No B.S., just straight talk!! Thanks for that, and Armorer, don't let the door hit ya in the derriere on the way out!! See Ya!!

I have never shot a whitetail- the closest to me here are over a thousand miles away on Stewart Island- off New Zealand.
The most common species here is the fallow-unlike the whitetail which will inhabit timber, fallow prefer open country, and it is hard to get a shot within 200 yds- making the 357 a very poor choice indeed.

Though I know deer farm owners who like the .357 carbine as a paddock gun.

I had a Browning 92 in 357 at one stage, and regret getting rid of it because it was such a good house gun- not that one is allowed such a thing in the Peoples Republic of Australia. I found it useless on feral pig beyond 60 yards and on big boars at a much lower range.

The 44 mag which is good to a smidge over 100 yds seems much better as an option.

All you say about the .357 is true... assuming run of the mill 158gr Factory ammo.

But a good 1800fps 180gr pill like the Buffalo Bore (prolly not available in Oz, but easily duplicable) would have killed those boars stone dead.

ive decided to go with 44 magnum though.. for reasons previously stated.. also i can find a wider variety of loads and make a wider variety of loads for small game, even flare loads to carry outdoors, and when i handled a single action army last, i was about 13, my hands are much larger now that im 6'0, so the ruger super blackhawk will be a nicer fit

some 180 grain 44 special loads will be perfect for teaching some lady friends how to shoot who are interested

I understand your attraction to 44 magnum. I was thinking that 429 reasons to regret attacking me was better than 357 when I bought my first lever action rifle a very late winchester 94 ae (tang safety) in 44 magnum. But now the pain in the wallet and shoulder leave me wishing that I had gone for the 357 magnum. Less pain in both and probably little difference in how quickly the problem is resolved. In fact the 357 might resolve the issue sooner for better shot placement! I don't want you to think that I bought this strictly for self defense. I did not. I bought it to shoot at paper targets at the range as entertainment. The self defense aspect was secondary. (The sherriffs department wasn't broke at the time). Oh yeah that wasn't just my first lever action it was my first firearm!
