Need help with value of a Lyman tang sight
Hey Guys,
Have an old Lyman No. 15 windage adjustable sight made between 1889 and 1906, that is just lying around in my safe. Thought I might put it up for sale. I can't seem to find any of these to compare prices with. The "old sights and scopes values" book at Barnes and Noble lists a value of $350.-650.00. Seems a bit high. Do any of you know what these generally sell for?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Hoosierdaddy

I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Hey jdad,
Thanks for the info. Your link shows the same sight I have with the folding eye-cup. It is marked with a "G" on the bottom of the post. Will list it for sale shortly.
Thanks again,
Hoosierdaddy

You might want to keep in mind that you've glimpsed an auction price - which is only a market indicator, and not what you may or may not get via pricing YOUR particular item.
Items sold @ auction may sell either below or above their "value" - as an auction value is different than a retail price or insurance value.
The best way to sell any item, like your sight, is at auction - and hope for the best (but be sure to enter a reserve price, below which it will not be sold).

Hey Pete44ru,
Thanks for explaining this. I should have asked for selling price instead of value. I was a jewelry appraiser for 30 years and know that the value and selling price can be miles apart. Was just looking for a starting point. I appreciate the help.
Thanks,
Hoosierdaddy

A "G" stamping means it was made for a Stevens 65 or 66, whatever they are. Probably a .22 of some sorts. According to my book, the Model 15 was not popular because it would not fold down.
The difference in value between a G stamping and one stamped for a Winchester levergun or single shot (D, DA, N, W, and others) can be three fold.
Tough call, as I play with these sights all the time, I would guestimate ----assuming the sight is in excellent mechanical condition--- that its worth at least 2 c-notes.-------------Sixgun

Re: Need help with value of a Lyman tang sight
Thanks Sixgun,
The sight came to me on a 45-90 Highwall. It's in pretty good condition overall, finish is good, one little screw on the side slightly boogered. The rifle was a tack driver with this sight on it.
Thanks,
Hoosierdaddy

Thats interesting. I'm curious, what is the hole spacing on the base? Winchesters all had a 2.175" spacing. (on centers) Stevens used a 1.5" hole spacing. Does the sight base look altered? I'd be interested in buying it if it had the proper Winchester hole spacing.-----------Sixgun

Hey Sixgun,
The hole spacing is 2.175". Send me your mailing address and I will ship it to you for an offer. If we can't come to a mutually agreeable price just ship it back.
