I am thinking that I need to do a custom Marlin 1894css. I want to get my hands on one and make it into a "Cowboy" rifle. I am interested in switching out the barrel and forstock wood to make this project work.
The tough part is finding an octagon barrel in stainless steel that will work on this gun. I am hoping to make it 22" and half round, make a custom 14 inch or so length forend and put a combination front sight on it.
Does anyone know where I should look to find a barrel for this project?
Thanks for any help.
Jay

Since Marlin's with ½-round/octagon barrels are scarce, AND as you're wanting a custom length forend, yo're probably stuck having a custom barrel made. If you truly want a 14" forend, you'll trally need to have at least the same 14" (approx) of the barrel as octagon. That's 3" over half in a 22" tube... (actually a bit more as the barrel ength will be measured from the breech face, and thats some 1" or so back from the beginning of the octagon contour. In addition, you'll need custom dovetails in the barrel for both the forend cap and the magazine hanger.
IMO, it'll look "unbalanced". Your best bet, from an asthetic point of view is the have the forend at the transistion between the octagon and round portions of the barrel. On my Winchester 94, that's right at the 12-½" mark on my 26" barrel (1" & a bit being the threaded shank).

Re: Need help with a project.
I'd contact one of these levergun smiths... I think they are going to have to make you a barrel. If a .44 Mag get a 1-20" twist.

Re: Need help with a project.
If'n it was mine, I would get with Douglas and have a barrel made. (yeah spendy, but so what) Then I would have any reputable CAS levergun smith do a very slick action, dovetail the barrel for the sights and mag tube hanger....... Google a feller who calls himself Lassiter....

Thanks for the information guys! I have a two smiths lined up, talked to one of them today actually. One will do the barrel and hanger work, the other will do the action work. The action work will be done by Spur. He is THE guy for SASS Marlin action jobs with short strokes.adirondakjack wrote:If'n it was mine, I would get with Douglas and have a barrel made. I have another contact that I will call tonight that may have a lead on a guy who can do the barrel work. This guy had a stainless .44 converted to .44/40 and had a full octagon barrel made for it. The rifle is a sight to behold.
Anyway, thanks for the help guys.
