OT - Made Grips For My Virginian Dragoon!

Post by salvo »

First try at handgun grips, I used the same wood that I made the scales for my Machete, the two of them make a nice set!
I hated the black rubber Pachmayr’s that were on it, I was going to buy a set of Buffalo Horn grips. My cheapskate side took over and I decided since the machete scales turned out nice I would try my hand at making a set of grips for the Dragoon. If I had to pay myself, I would have been way ahead with the Buffalo Horn, spent most of the weekend in the garage!

Now that is a set of grips to be proud of. I like 'em.
Next thing is how do they feel when you shoot the gun. Look to me like they'll be really comphy.
What kind of wood is that?

Thanks Joe, I kind of patterned them from my FA's grips, the FA's grip frame is not as wide but I was able to get almost the same feel. They fit my hand like a glove, Hope to shoot it next weekend.
Not sure what kind of wood it is, I think it is cherry? We have a cabinet shop at work and I went out there and found the hardest wood I could get my hands on, it's very heavy and had a nice grain. Next set I'll buy some nice blanks of known wood or horn to work with.

I wish I could do work like that. If I tried to make a set of grips they'd end up looking like .... well like anything but what I wanted.

I'm not sure what type of wood it is? Lefty Dude thought it was pecan. Could be mahagony.
I'll take a piece to the lumber store and see if I can find out.

SA grips LOOK tough, and getting em perfect takes finesse, but the basic shape is duck soup. IT'S A CONE (sure don't look it, but it is). Belt sander and courage and shazaam, yer 2/3 there. Toughest part is the front strap area.

Ya dun good!

Thanks, I really enjoyed making these, can't wait tor try them out, range report to follow. Have not even shot it yet!
Adirondakjack, sounds like you whittled a few. I fashioned them from the grips on my Freedom Arms 83, not really coned shaped, kind of straight down from the top to about 1/3 down then the cone shape to the butt. I guess there is different shapes and names for them, but your right basicly a cone and tedious fitting.
Hope others give it a try.

I can't believe I missed this thread when it was active Scott. Those grips look great!!

I refinished the wood set on mine and while they don't look as good as yours they get the job done, but it just so happens that I've been looking for a set of the Pachmayr grips for my Virginian so I can't help but ask if you're looking to move yours along? If so I'll certainly make you an offer.

Again, those grips look just fantastic and I have to say that the blue and polish on that Dragoon looks outstanding as well.

Best,
Oly
