OT: Hole-E Cow! Guatamalan sinkhole...

Post by O.S.O.K. »

"Flooding and landslides from Tropical Storm Agatha have killed more than 150 people throughout Central America in the past few days, and apparently caused a giant Guatemala City sinkhole."

Wow. One minute your sitting in your kitchen eating your oaty o's and the next... woosh - down into the depths

What's really weird to me is that the hole is nearly perfectly symetrical - looks like the mole people drilled up from underneath... weird.

Ya gotta wonder how deep that puppy is...

... and what's in there?

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

WOW

And that's not considered a really big one.
But he said that the most catastrophic sinkholes occur in places with mature karst development, such as Papua New Guinea, Borneo and Indonesia.

Sinkholes in those areas have been known to be a mile or two across and hundreds of feet deep.

I wish the picture was better...

I could (almost) photoshop a better web-photo...

It just doesn't look real. Too round. Too "perfect".

May as well believe every sign-waving moron at some political rally is waving a sign saying exactly what you want it to say...

I checked it on Snopes. They have it posted as news and linked it to here http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... torms.html

It was also on the noon news here in Canada yesterday.

That does not mean it is true, but Snopes has not given it the thumbs down yet.

Well it's been posted on many major news outlets and I've seen multiple photographs of it from multiple angles so at this juncture I no longer feel the need to suspect it as a fraud. My favorite photograph of it was taken at a much lower angle and had a fellow laying on his belly peering over the edge with a camera shooting down into it.

My wife is a geologist and she says that usually these things are caused by limestone erosion beneath the surface and while I don't know if that's what caused this one I have to wonder how they get rid of it? If you fill the hole in with dirt wont it just happen again? I dunno. Sure is interesting however.

And yes, it looks like something the Silver Surfer did!

Best,
Oly
