DRC Marlin 1894 takedown 45ACP

Post by Palmtreee »

Picked up my 45 ACP today and snapped a few pics. I have a busy schedule for the next few weeks so a range date might be on the back burner.

You have GOT to give us a range report. Keep it in this topic and we'll make it a sticky, at least, and save it for posterity.

Nice touch having a mag pouch for his 1911 too. How many rounds does you tube mag hold?

I need more info.
Who is DRC?
When did they start converting them to .45 ACP?
HOW do they convert them?

Can I shoot it? I'll supply the ammo.

DRC=David R. Clay custom levers. I have a hard time finding his info, but love the look of his work. I love Brian Pearce's takedown Marlin 44.

I've got two marlins converted to Cowboy .45 Special (acp length but rimmed), and the deal is in modifying or making a new carrier to cycle the short rounds, then for ACP you'd have to re-chamber and rework the extractor. Probably would tig up the "ears" on the bolt face to a smaller footprint for ACP also. It's involved, timing is touchy, but when done right, works well. My 16" marlin holds 10 or 11 +1, based on bullet choice, and the 24" holds 17+1. Performance will be a skinny hair better than a 5" pistol, not a lot like we expect from long cases like .44 mag or .45 colt. The .45 ACP is a very efficient round that wrings all there is out of most loads in about 8" of barrel, then no gain, maybe even slower when you move from 8 to 16". Light loads WILL run slower than a pistol, and heavy loads a little faster. Still a very neat concept. I call mine a "hillbilly assault rifle" and can put 10 downrange in 3.5 seconds.

FWIW you CAN mine .45 Super data for use in the Marlin and do so quite safely. Even starting loads from .460 Rowland are not gonna hurt it, but owing to the shorter OAL, don't go past that. a 230 XTP and 10 grains Power Pistol is prety snappy.

I made the butt cuff to hold an eight round mag for the 1911 cause I am a huge 1911 junkie. The mag tube should hold ten rounds with the 16 1/2" bbl. I had David Clay work the chamber to feed my favorite 45ACP round a H&G #68 200 grain SWC. David said it shoots the bullet very well. I am swamped with work so I won't be able to get to the range for a few weeks. I can't wait.

I had DRC make the conversion up, It was a basic 1894 45Colt. BBl was cut to 16 1/2'', 45 ACP chamber, takedown, scout rail, DRC trigger, large loop lever, meltdown treatment, XS sights and high polish blue finish. Dave sighted the rife for 50 yds. If you can make it to Dallas, I have ammo you can shoot.
