A UNIQUE 1/4 PLATE DAGUERREOTYPE OF GUN MAKER, ELI WHITNEY, JR. (1820-1895). IN GEOMETRIC UNION CASE. c.1850. SON OF ELI WHITNEY, OF COTTON GIN FAME, WHITNEY WAS A PRINCIPAL MAKER OF GUNS IN AMERICA. IN 1846, SAMUEL COLT, PERSUADED CAPT. WALKER OF THE TEXAS RANGERS FOR A CONTRACT FOR 1000 OF COLTS REVOLVERS. WHITNEY MANUFACTURED THE REVOLVERS FOR COLT. LATER THE CO. WAS SOLD TO WINCHESTER.

This also leads to a fun little historical fact which I learned about in the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco. The .357 Magnum was the first revolver to come along with more power than the Walker Colt. The Walker Colt actually used as much black powder in each cylinder as was commonly used in most muzzleloading rifles of the time.
It is no wonder that the Walker was such a formidable weapon in the hands of an experienced fighting man.

Big Bore 94, no Whitney, Texas is named after a railroad executive Charles A. Whitney. He was the brother-in-law of J.P. Morgan. This was in 1879.

I once owned a heavy "buffalo" rifle. It was a whitneyville armory. It looked like a large oversized remington rolling block. It was 50 caliber "something". Probley 50-90 or 50-100. The beast weighed about 12 pounds, heavy octogon barrel. It had quite a few slots on top of the barrel. The guy who bought it from me was a well known owner of the old pony express gun shop, ray houser, that used to be in chatsworth california. He explained to me the owner must have been a old frontiersman who as he aged moved the sights. He said this one is going over my fireplace! I made a big mistake selling that rifle! I had bought a new winchester 94 and traded the guy to get it when I found out that was what he wanted. This was 40 years ago.
