One of the only stories I remember that is "standard issue" is the horror story of the kid who, the week before you arrived to basic training, tied a buffer cord around his neck and threw it out of the second story window. Poor fella just couldn't take the Hell you were about to go through. Almost everyone I've come across who came through Ft. Benning knew that story, only the dates/times had changed.

I recently left an internet group because I got tired of an ex-Marine always reminding everyone of his service, looking down his nose at those who haven't served, and using the fact he was a Marine as an excuse for being an authority on all things military and political. Also anytime he was backed into a corner in a discussion he used "I was a Marine" to bully his way out.

I respect the military and those that serve. I don't respect those that serve this country, but think those that make up the country are a PITA and dumb.

Blaine, I was always told the same thing. Dont know if it was true but I tend to not think it was BS because every base I was on had the same story.

And he can beat his chest all he wants, he earned that right.

I think I adjusted to civilian life easy beacuse I retired out in the country and dont have to put up with people. (and they dont have to put up with me )

I missed the military and it's traditions too, for a while.

The crowds got me. Going to the movie theater, I couldn't see the line for the people standing everywhere. I didn't realize , the crowd was the line.

I got over myself real fast. After realising that in order to function without some one telling me what to do, I would have to use my head, just like everone else.

I figure that is why the 'oldheads' go crazy when they retire. No one to tell them what to do?

Blaine, you think they don't uderstand, and they might not. Do they need to? The 'civilians' ( I get tired of that word being used derogatory ) have lives, jobs, kids, friends, and responsibilities of their own. Do you understand them?

Ya know This is the fourth for fifth time yahoos on this board have got bent out of shape for a fella (not just me) mentioning his service.........Those of you that are inclined to do so can KMA and chill out...maybe read a little history before you embarrass yourselves again.... Thanks, you've just proved my point about civilians (at least some of them)

Look, I spent 27½ years doing my part for Uncle Sam. He rewarded me with more than just a retirement check, he gave me real friends to last a lifetime (some literally), he gave me stories on stories to tell the grandkids (maybe the GREAT grandkids), AND he gave me a view of the world that doesn't match those who haven't been forced for years to be awake, asleep and/or wet and/or cold and/or apart from OTHER friends and family or those who haven't lived overseas (outside THE WORLD) for a time. That's the way it is.

But it is one thing to say that I think this way because I did this (or that) and another entirely to say that you're wrong and I know better because I'm a VETERAN. We've got one guy running for President who thinks just that way and I, as a VETERAN, don't care for it. Just because, you know, I've been there and done that and have a different view of the world.

That said, it seems this is a pretty bad topic for winding folks up for some reason so I'm locking it.

BTW, Blaine, it is BS, there are 3 rifle rounds in the truck and it is a truck on the top of the post flag pole and there is only one per post (supposedly but I've seen a couple of posts with 2 or more). Probably THAT story about the 3 rounds is "stuff" but you did have to provide that answer at the promotion and soldier of the quarter/year boards.
