re-barreling a levergun to .41 mag
I want to buy a new levergun in a pistol caliber. I DO NOT want an Italian, Brazilian, or other repro, I have to say that I want an American made weapon. As Winchester is not building what I want, I suppose it will be a Marlin 1894. So, here is my question. Is there anyone out there that can re-barrel a Marlin 1894 to .41 mag? I do NOT want your opinions of the round, thank you.
Re: re-barreling a levergun to .41 mag
Why not just find a Marlin that's already chambered in 41Mag, the 1894FG? They're not real common, but they're out there.

Re: re-barreling a levergun to .41 mag
Finding a used Marlin '94 in .41 Mag. can be a trick, since not many owners seem eager to let them go. They seldom last all day on the used gun racks around here. They make great companion arms to Ruger's Blackhawk revolver.
there is more to rebarreling to .41 Mag. than first meets the eye. Bolt face, magazine tube, carrier, cartridge stop, extractor are all different for this "in-between" round.

Re: re-barreling a levergun to .41 mag
Marlin 1894's in 41 Magnum can be hard to find locally, or you can go to the internet sites like GunBroker or AuctionArms and not wait so long. They made four models, the first was the 1894S, 20" round barrel; then the CCL, 20" octogonal barrel; then 250 stainless trapper's with 16" round barrel; and most recently the 1894FG with 20" round barrel and pistol grip; previous models were all straight grip stocked. Usually not much of a premium price-wise as demand is as low as the supply.
Re: re-barreling a levergun to .41 mag
Well, thanks all for the advice, but... I am in Afghanistan, and all auction sites are blocked by the Army, so I can't buy an old Marlin. Yes, I know all about the requirements to rebarrel a weapon, as I am an armorer/weapons tech over here. My plan was to have my wife buy the rifle, and then send it off, but since no one has any useful help there, I'll just say the hell with it until I get home next year. Thanks for unwanted advice. I asked a very, very specific question, and got advice that was no help, not an answer (other than one person trying to show off what he knew about the subject, without answering me.) By the way, won't be back to the forum.
Re: re-barreling a levergun to .41 mag
Well Sir, with an attitude such as yours, I can't say you'll be missed.
The advice you received may not have been a direct answer to your question, but offered a more reasonable approach to get you the firearm you desire. We don't know you, or your knowledge of Marlin 1894 rifles. Not EVERYONE knows that the Marlin was factory chambered in 41 Mag.

GEESH, WHAT A SCHMUCK !!! YOU ASK A SIMPLETON HALFVAST QUESTION, EVERYONE TREATED YOU NICE SINCE YOU WERE THE NEW GUY, AND THEN YOU SHOW YOUR TRUE COLORS. BY THE WAY ANY ARMORER/WEAPONS TECH WORTH HIS SALT WOULD ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION SO WE HAVE TO ASSUME YOUR CO HAS NO IDEA THERE IS A FRAUD IN HIS MIDST, HUH ??Armorer wrote:Well, thanks all for the advice, but... Well I think you'll find a lot of 41 magnum fans here and the few guys who will give you a hard time about the cartridge will do it mistly tongue in cheek.
I would suggest you wife seeking out a 41 mag Marlin at Auction Arms, Gun Broker, or Shotgun News. I see them for sale 5 or 6 times a year on GunBroker. And while they are not inexpensive, they would still be a bargain compared to the cost of a full up rebuidling of a Marlin 94 to 41 Magnum.
Keep an eye on the Mossberg website, I was told the Mossberg 494 lever action might be offered in some niche calibers.

I didn't understand why, if his wife was going to buy the donor rifle, she could not simply buy a production .41 for him.

41 mag is one of my favorites.
I can't swing $700.00 at the moment, although
a conversion sounds wicked interestin'.
Who is that Armorer fella?
I wouldn't recommend a gunsmith I liked to him,
that's for sure! Can you imagine what he'd be like as
a customer if he can't hold a civil conversation on a
forum like this one?

Seems like my facts got in the way of his dream...!?!
If presentation of factual information consititutes "showing off" in his world, he has a hard life ahead of him, for certain...
Oh Well, he said he didn't want opinions on the .41 Mag. round, so I didn't give him one. Just explained the impediments to his project, which he should already have known. Hope he chooses a career in the military, where someone will be there to tell him what to do and think every day. (not trying to "dis" the Armed Services, but some folks just NEED that kind of daily direction...) Too bad he left us before his permanent brain came in...
Some deck sure is shy a joker...

You know, thinking back on it now, I have to wonder why anyone bothered to reply to him at all, what with his right-off-the-bat snooty attitude. jd45

I am guessing it's because the good people in here like helping a guy out, and are not used to seeing such rudeness, so they did not even recognize it when they saw it.

Re: re-barreling a levergun to .41 mag
Gee I am kinda new here too, but have never found a internet site as friendly as this one!!!
I don't see or read anything that could ruffle ones feathers! everyone has a opinion and it's good to hear!
Now back on topic I happen to love the 41 Mag shoot a older S&W with the counter bored Cyl and my favorite load is a 240gr Lee cast slug at 1100fps and would love a rifle to go with it and really your only choice is a custom Rebarrel of a .357 of American made steal that would only leave well a Marlin! Or just Find.41mag Marlin Simple EH! my accent got in the way EH. That's because all the other Cal's have a bigger Rim Die than the 41 Mag Yep way too hard to make bigger Smaller but easy to make smaller bigger get it? you should know right? After all your putting gun's together for the U.S Forces the best Forces in the World when it come to tech stuff Right?
Sorry too the mod's I am kinda grumpy!
P.S I also ask dumb ? Dumb too me as I really do not know. I do research but it is best to ask of those have actually done it like my how long to hang pork or should I hang it I really had No idea.

I dunno if I'd even take a job on from our weapons tech, but then again,

Re: re-barreling a levergun to .41 mag
Simple question-ok. Simple answer, yes. A little more detail: Most anyone who is somewhat mechanically inclined can rebarrel a marlin 94 to .41 mag. There are even people right here on this forum who can rebarrel one and do all the other stuff necessary to make it function correctly. A couple of them even tried to answer you and you insulted them for it. You ought to be ashamed. Or for only 500.00 and you supply the parts, I will be happy to "rebarrel" one for you...no guarantees!I want to buy a new levergun in a pistol caliber. I DO NOT want an Italian, Brazilian, or other repro, I have to say that I want an American made weapon. As Winchester is not building what I want, I suppose it will be a Marlin 1894.
