OT: A nasty revolver accident.
DON'T look if you are squeamish, these pics are of whats left of a man's left thumb.
http://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php?p=7 ... stcount=54
Evidently he had his thumb by the front of the cylinder and the forcing cone while firing a .460 S&W.
There's a lesson to be learned here.

Yep. A little gas under pressure...

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

Just about the time you think you've seen it all. I guess that came from some kind of a modified Weaver stance? Let's see now, how did they do this on TV? Oh yeah cradle the gun in your off hand...

Thats disgusting, not to mention very painfully looking.
But not at all surprising. I've fired a S&W 460V with the short barrel and it had the most vicious over pressures from both the barrel cylinder gap and muzzle of any revolver magnum or otherwise I've ever fired.
The pressure of the muzzle blast blew boxes and papers off the counter in front of me and shoved my glasses back against my face with noticeable force. It also rocked my ear muffs back behind the top of my head. And at 10 yards you could see the pressures buffet the hanging target board.
Here is a pic of the one I fired ........ well the guns in that fireball somewhere.

From the experiences I had with the one I shot putting any body part near the side blast would be the same as sticking it in a blow torch.

IMHO, there is no need for something like that. If a 45 colt or 44 mag wont get the job done, then its time to leave. Humans just always want to push everything a little faster and a little farther.
I am not bashing anyone who buys a 460 or 500 or whatever those cannons are. Luckily we have the freedom to do such things.

I tend to agree, I personally see little, if any need for that power in a handgun. But for those that want to own or shoot them, do so at your own pleasure or risk.45-70- wrote:IMHO, there is no need for something like that. For that guy to even think of suing S&W is ludicrus. Sad that his thumb is screwed up so bad, but does anyone in their right mind think that NOTHING comes out of the gap between the cylander and barrel of ANY revolver ever made? Something is pushing those bullets out????
I own, and have owned revolvers, but I'm not a fan for that reason.
Hey, maybe next year he'll try it with the 500 and sue them again! Heck he'll then be eligible for the Sara Brady award.

I have no use for the 460 S&W, or the 500, or the 480 Ruger, or any of the huge revolver rounds either. I was simply at the range when it's owner was shooting 454 Casulls out of it. I went to check out what he was shooting and he let me shoot it. Wow what a rush! I got a live round and some brass for my trouble.
That dude that blew the end off his thumb is an idiot. That X frame is such a HUGE revolver with such a long frame that to get his thumb near the b/c gap he had to do something stupid or wrong. You can't use a proper two handed hold and get your thumb any where near the gap.
If he sues S&W I hope they cream him.

Well if you miss him with the bullet, the muzzle blast will incinerate him!
This guy had a ND and was man enough to post about it.

That's a sobering post. He did a great job with the story and pictures too. He's lucky it missed the bones.

WOW
That puts the super handgun magnums in perspective! I never figured a 44 magnum as forgiving but here is my story.
Years ago after I got my first 44 Mag, I saw some pictures in gun rags about handgun silhouette shooters. They were in a reclining position with the gun resting on the calf of their right leg with the leg bent at the knee and the knee high. When I tried it, the cylinder gap was right up against my calf. It only took one round to figure out this was a dumb idea
It stung and scorched my jeans but did no permanent damage. I later went back to look at those pictures and saw that the shooters using revolvers had a heavy leather shield between the blast and their leg.
Can you imagine if I had used the 460 or 500. Amputation below the knee!!! Until now, I didn't realize how forgiving the 44 mag was

There's a Youtube video out there kind of as a respose to this where the shooter puts a hotdog next to the cylinder of a Model 29 and fires a light target round to show just what even the light rounds can do.
Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits.

This guy's accident is on par with what I saw as a teenager.
This kid I knew was talking to his girlfriend at the same time as he was lighting a firecracker he was planning to throw.
He lit the firecracker at the same time as his girlfriend said something that ticked him off. He turned to her to make a rebuttal, forgot he'd just lit the firecracker, and then had it explode in the palm of his hand.
I'll always remember the cussing this kid did right afterwards! That plus the jumping up and down.

Rm Hammer, funny you mentioned handgun silhouette shooting. Years ago I was late to a silhouette match after a 100 mile drive and jumped on the line as quickly as I could, in a hurry, as the match was ending soon. I got on the line to shoot creedmore position with my Dan Wesson .357 super mag which as you know does not shoot at normal magnum pressures. My first round fired proved painful as I forgot to strap on my Kevlar blast shied on my thigh. I got a split pair of Levis along with a bruise but noting like that guys thumb! Just guessing but I think the .357SM is rated at 40K psi and the 460 is probably 50K psi. After experiencing my blast with the 357SM, I would not have thought that the 460 would do that much damage to a thumb.
