OT: thump thump thump thump gasp...

Post by O.S.O.K. »

I just got through riding my son's bike maybe 4 miles... thump thump thump my heart goes. I'm getting my breath back now but man oh man.

That's what I need to do every evening.

I've been walking the dog but she's old (14 in October) and can't go but about 1/2 mile before pooping out (literally, I think - she prefers to do her business on walks...). At least at one time. She can do that a couple times a day though... pretty good for an old dog. She's my idol. I need to think more like here - accept about food - she'll eat anything tasty to the point of popping

She's not as overweight as I am though. She's got a trainer that watches what she eats...

49 in 5 days. 49. Gotta get a colostamy or whatever...

This is my reward for making this far? And being able to feed myself and such?

Yep.

I need to fix up my old bike and do the same thing. I've gotten fat and stove up so the bike would be more helpful than walking.

That's my logic too Joe. The bike is much kinder to my knees. But I need to adjust the seat or raise the handle bars or something because its not very kind to my manhood.

I switched out the crotch busting 10 speed seat for a regular seat many many years ago. Might look a bit funny but it sure feels better.

I agree with Joel. I wouldn't volunteer for a colostomy, thank you very much.

Here's what I did... rather than try to figure out how far I can go then devide by 2, I decided to put a cheap Chinese 2-cycle motor on my bicycle.

I ride it (pedal power) until I can't go any more, then let the motor bring me home.

Makes my rides much less boring/repetitive...

I would suggest go test driving a" Elctra Townie" bike . A friend of mine dad has one and you can seriuosly drive this all day long. It has the pedals forward not under you . I can't explain it but it's not like any other bike you've ever ridden.

A trick of the trade is to run a mountain bike not a road bike(say, like a Trek 4300)with a set of 100psi Kenda Kwest 26x1.5 tires.
By doing this you get a fast pedaling mountain bike(very reasonable) for the road which also keeps you more upright(a liittle more wind resistance)and is quite a bit heavier than a road bike,so you ride only half the mileage of the road bike but get about the same physical workout. For the family jewels, for me its the spongy wonder seat or I dont ride period.

I put on 120 miles a week on a Cannondale M700 Mountain bike, never have a single numbness issue down there below.
Don,t even be concerned on distance you ride for a while though just the time you ride.Start slow and work up.
Then you can start gauging the distance/time etc.

Just my opinion but:
If you want to lose a ton of weight(like being on the tv show survivor)drink a lot of water, then
1----- bowl of oatmeal 30 mins before you ride.
3 or 4--- 6oz Yoplait light yogurts throughout the day plus a handful of almonds/1 lemon
dinner---meat/fish/chicken---decent sized peice of one of them and big helping of some type green veggie.

night snack(before 8pm)----------2 cups decaf green tea with 2 celery sticks filled with peanut butter.

And don't forget the helmet!! Fortunately for me I was wearing one 18 years ago when I had my bicycle accident. If I hadn't been I wouldn't be writing this today. I still got a pretty bad head injury that took away my short term memory.

A mountain bike fitted with high pressure tires is the way to go. Seat should be about level (not tilted up or down) and set so that there is a slight bend at the knee when the leg is fully extended. The most important thing for riding comfort is PADDED RIDING SHORTS.Padded cycling gloves are nice too.

Guys,
Shop around,if you can find a good used Cannondale M700 thats the ticket.
For the taller guys like myself(6-4)the XL is perfect.
You can pick one up(used) on occasion for around a couple hundred.
Of all my bikes my very favorite is a used 1992 M700 that a doctor sold me for $125(red XL)

But please just read the link below. You know when somthing is just handbuilt that is absolutely high end/quality.
http://www.spongywonder.com/Content/ima ... rame_c.jpg
This stainless/neopreme seat goes from touching to way wide apart. Also adjusts from flat to various angles. Also will handle a lot of weight.and is light and streamlined.
Even for women(its all my wife will use) also it looks so cool everyone is always wanting to look at it!
http://www.spongywonder.com/OurBikeSeats.htm
On a couple of their photos that long black skinny thing comming out from the back of seat is just a tag that says spongywonder. Some show it/some dont.
You can ride all day long and nothing touches seat except your sit bones.
Note:---This seat is not for hard core off road mountain biking since there is no saddle.(like for jumping and such)
But for everyone else about two trips around the block or a mile down the road/trail and it becomes second nature to get the feel.(At least it did for us)
Though I have them(the extra neopreme pads which can be replaced. My same pads have so far lasted 9 years through all 4 seasons!
I know I rant on this, but its that good. Cheap?? No,But is most High Grade Stuff cheap?
Hand Made in New Brunswick, CANADA buy a Engineer that said there had to be a better way!
As I am typing this right now my wifes cute little rear is sitting on one fitted to a Schwinn Evolution Comp trainer. All our other seats we had(Salvation Army)

I'm a big fan of bikes for auld pharts these day....since Feb have lost 15+ pounds. but, more important I've brought my BP and blood sugar readings down from almost dead to very normal. Feel like a million, and back is getting better from the exercise. I'm not there by a long shot, but I can go do 10+ miles without much trouble and I've been riding to work every day I can....I have this one pictured below, but I'm already thinking decent mountain bike someday....

Blaine,
Really, those Treks are very well built and should do ya well, and if the seat don't cause no numbness
(leave er as she is and as they say-------- ride/baby/ride
But if that seat does start to bother you---Dont stop riding whatever you do(then, get a spongywonder)but keep riding!

You are really doing good friend---------Proud of ya!

I felt like I needed on after riding that bike...

OK, colanoscopy - that's bad enough.

And I just got back from riding again. I think if I just raise the handlebars a bit it'll allow me to ride more upright and help alevivate the groin massage... not to mention the gut squeeze

And as to the bike - I'm going to ride it as long as my son doesn't need it - I bought him a used car - he's made it sucessfully past his freshman year at college. It's a Raleigh mountain bike and is about right for what I need.

Blaine - good on you for your weight loss and BP improvement! Bikes make a lot of sense - I just need to keep it up... I'm always going out of town and interupting the routine.
