ROA Loads
I've heard it on good authority that filling up the cyl with FFFG and compressing the ball on top is just as good as any other way to charge an ROA.....I know they are strong, but is that too much?? (Yes, TERRY, I'll read the book..just have not received it yet)

Re: ROA Loads
I dont know if that is too much.
I settled on, my lil powder measure set on about 35, using 3f. It was the most accurate load I tried. I never shot over a machine, so I have no idea the speed.

Re: ROA Loads
I believe that forty grains is the recommended maximum but, I get much better accuracy with 35 grains.
This is probably because the lever can bottom out, giving consistent compaction of the powder.

Re: ROA Loads
Use a full charge of FFg. Full charge = Ball seated with moderate compression.

Re: ROA Loads
I don't know if that will give the greatest accuracy but you can't fill it "too" much. I can't remember offhand but what ever the Pyrodex "P" equivalent is, is the recommended powder and as long as the ball is seated below the face of the cylinder you are good to go. I can't really squeeze any more than 50g of Pyrodex "P" in my cylinders and have tried it several times with decent accuracy. FWIW, there are aftermarket cylinders for the ROA that claim to expand that to 60g.
Also, the recommended accurate load in my manual is 20g with some cornmeal filler.

Re: ROA Loads
Google (IIRC) "ed harris ruger old army" that should find you a series of archived discussions about ROA loads. I will post my own saved file sometime tonight after work.
I'm away from my computer right now, but if you will leave a message, I still have my Geek Tools...

Re: ROA Loads
"Load it up till the ball just fits?!?!?"
Yup, that will work and it's fun to make the BOOM and some smoke, and I'll admit to doing that many times in the past. (Often after someone sees me shooting my target loads and asks if they can "take a shot"...)
But for the very best in accuracy, my ROA does well with:
* 20 grains Pyrodex P or 777
* Then fill the chamber with corn meal
* Then seat the ball
The filler aids compression, keeps the ball closer to the forcing cone and smells/tastes pretty good too (kidding!). You just may want to try this range, or maybe +/- 5 grains, to develop your own accuracy load.
I thought I had posted all of these Old Army Modifications to this site, but I could not find them on a search (maybe they're too old now?), so here's some info about what one can do to an ROA...
