You can only have one and only one! Which
I kinow this has probably been asked other times but times change and people are always adding/selling/swapping guns etc. This can change accordingly.
So,with that in mind--------IF you could only have (1)ONE GUN period, counting whether it be either handgun/rifle/a gun very close to your heart(but still only one gun period, what would it be as of today?? Not one for each catergory just one and thats it.

Re: You can only have one and only one! Which
Yep, the topic comes up a couple/few times a year, but it is always a good one. Interesting how things may change given the changing times too.
God-forbid, only one - I'd still pick my S&W Model 19. Flexible, powerful, simple. Plus, it was my Dad's service revolver, so the only way I'm parting with it, to use the expression (but it is true), is having it ripped from my cold, dead hands...

Darn! My 410/45 Colt paradox NEF single-shot would be the most practical choice, but hauling it around the streets with 3 million other people would be too tough. Got to go with the handgun.

I'll go along with the others. A 22LR rifle would be hard to beat. I'd probably go with one of my Anschutz rifles.

Re: You can only have one and only one! Which
Without question or a moments hesitation it would be a good pump shotgun combo in either 12 or 20 gauge.
Re: You can only have one and only one! Which
Thats a Easy? My BRNO 602 in 375 H&H, I know it is a big bugger and way over kill but it is also very accurate. I cast for it too keep costs way down and it shoots great with a round ball too going 900 fps. Or I can load a Sierra 300gr and Take a Elk at long range and when I win the lotto I will be off to Africa with it.
But really Just one gun?
Since this is a lever Forum and it had to be a lever it would be my 99 in .300savage.
I use my bow for up close varmints that come into the yard, so I am good with one gun and I also do not count my air rifle as a gun. lol
But again the big gun is not fussy about any load I have tried in it be it a sqibb or a 300gr FMJ it shoots them all well.
I could bag a deer with a .22lr though illegal so I will stick to my mid bore .375 and if I shoot a Moose that's like 4 deer in one for me. So it's the big gun get's my vote
P.S I have seen more Moose killed with a 30/30 tied I think with the .270. Dam them small bores

I too enjoy this type of threads as things do change.
These threads also show who packs, and who doesn't. Gotcha!
For me it is a Smith & Wesson Shorty 45. No one gun can do it all, but it comes all mighty close.

I agree - always a fun topic and interesting mental exercise...Ysabel Kid wrote:Yep, the topic comes up a couple/few times a year, but it is always a good one. Interesting how things may change given the changing times too.
Like YK, I think I'd pick a handgun - my Redhawk .45 Colt, most likely. Strong, can fire many types of ammunition (and in a pinch perhaps even well-constructed sabot loads if needed), use many types of powder, virtually any large primer, and is powerful enough to do anything I can think of being likely to need.
Unfortunately, in a 'just one gun' scenario, one has to assume that something very socially BAD has happened, and the nation would be in an unstable state, with the "authorities" corrupt and violent and thus any VISIBLE guns rendering the owner subject to harm. In such a case, a handgun (or a SMG) makes sense, and due to the more finniky nature of feeding SMG's, and the higher likelihood they'd be banned or stolen by a corrupt "authority" makes me prefer the good old double action revolver.
The "second" gun, by the way, would be a levergun in the same caliber (either .44 Mag or .45 Colt would do, and nothing wrong with .357 Mag in this scenario, either).
The "third" (I know, I'm just anticipating the next thread...

I try to live by the rules. I even pay the tolls when no one is looking. But, this may be the proverbial straw. I certainly agree with the .22 LR votes, but then I'd have to find a friend who chose a reliable pistol, or even find someone with a 1911 who nodded off often...

Interesting - on one thread, everybody is extolling the virtues of the venerable .30-30, but on this thread only one person chose it. I'm still trying to decide which is the only one for me. I'm leaning toward my .45-70 Marlin cowboy.

Re: You can only have one and only one! Which
My primary motivation is hunting, so I would be inclined to choose a cape gun or drilling of some sort, in a nice short 20" version so it could be used for home defense.
However, I don't own one, so out of the firearms I own I'd choose my 44 trapper which could take down just about anything I hunt and is still a quite capable home defense weapon. I could even load snake shot and have a slight chance of taking some birds.

Some days I think I'd want an AR-15 to take BACK my lost guns.... BUT, when I had no money, had to have one gun to do it all, anywhere, it was a 12 ga. It might be what I had back then...

Or it might be the Winchester 120 with extra barrels...

Either way there is lots of versatility. A .22 LR would come next. Then a 1911, then a deer rifle, then an AR... Hey! That is about what I did, for real!

Pre-lock S&W 65LS (Lady Smith) .357 - unique in K-land blend of fixed sight, 3", full lug/shroud, satin stainless. Tied with:
Similar format gloss stainless 66 Combat - these two vie for nicest package Smith's ever put together IMO. 3" 686 close behind or right in there. Could interchange here but, WRT the latter "L" entry, carry-ability puts the Ks over the top and trumps extra round or two cap and higher tolerance of regular use of 125 gr in the 686--but just barely. Ultimately, 158s get it done fine.

Tied with:
Brand-new (just being announced) New Vaquero .44 Special in 3-3/4" and 4-5/8" lengths. High country/possible cat or bear country living would put this one over the top.
