JUST MAKING SURE

Post by rjohns94 »

Like a colt 6 shooter, the ruger 3 screw should be carried with an empty chamber under the hammer, correct?

Correct.

The hammer in the Old Model or 3 Screw Rugers, if unconverted, rests directly on the firing pin which rests on the primer.

I thought all the Ruger designs included a transfer bar,
I guess you learn something new every day
The empty chamber under the hammer was to prevent the hammer striking the primer if the gun was dropped or the hammer inadvertently struck by an object while in the holster. The transfer bar would prevent these types of ADs because the trigger needs to be pulled to lift the transfer bar into position between the hammer and firing pin.

gun, that's what made the "New Model" new. Ruger still converts "Old Model"s if you send them in whether you want them to or not.

yep, lack of transfer bar, loading 5 for now. also, I hear that you should not dry fire these because the hammer comes in contact with the frame and causes cracks. Any truth to that???

Yep, five rounds in the OM three screw. Can't answer the question about dryfiring and cracking the frame.

Old Model Rugers.....Load one, skip one, load four more, cock the hammer, then let it down on the empty chamber.

I could do it in my sleep.....LOL

Me too. Which, BTW, is why I'll never send any of them into Ruger for repairs!

I can't imagine that, given the legendary strength of the action. Then again, I use snap caps for dry-firing. They don't cost much! :D

Gotta agree with Joe. When my wife started shooting CAS she used a 3-screw and on the advice of several past champions, dry-fired many thousands of practice rounds. Nary a problem with the gun. She traded it off for her 1st Colt SAA and that stopped her dry-firing practice.
