OT Rem Nylon 66
I have a Rem Nylon 66 that wanders as the temp changes it will shoot great but if the temp outside goes up or down you have to re sight it. I ran into another shooter that had the same problem is this common to the gun? Leave it in the sun on a hot day of gopher shooting and it will be out by 3'' at 50 yds and it is hard to pin down too it might be low it might be high right or left. I have tried three different scopes on it.
Re: OT Rem Nylon 66
With the way the 66s are put together I don't think consistency with a scope can ever be guaranteed across a range of temps and conditions. After all, you're clamping a scope to a receiver "cover" attached to a plastic "body". The barrel isn't really attached or pressed into the receiver either. My 66 will shoot okay with a scope after all the screws are snugged up, but will change with the weather. I finally gave up on the scope idea and just shoot it with the iron sights it came with. At least they are firmly attached to the barrel!
My 66 is the slickest 22 autoloader I've ever shot, but I grab my scope sighted Marlin 39a when I want to go squirrel hunting.

Re: OT Rem Nylon 66
I have pretty much retired my 66 and only shoot my old 39. I found the open sights too course on the 66 for fine shooting. I find it very hard to see and shoot a Gopher at 50 yards with the nylon with out a scope if all you see is a eye or head poking up out of a hole. It is a slick gun will feed any type of LR ammo you put in it(un like my friends 10/22) but so will my Marlin or Win 250nemhed wrote:With the way the 66s are put together I don't think consistency with a scope can ever be guaranteed across a range of temps and conditions. Re: OT Rem Nylon 66
I got a 66 as a present from my dad in 1961 and had it for only about a year because it's POI wasn't repeatable either. Seemed that no matter what I did the thing would shoot to a different POI every time I fired it. Even the gunsmith at the place my dad bought it from was baffled as to how to make it consistent. I honestly don't understand why they are so well liked these days because while they may have been a good idea conceptually, in actuality they were very poor performing rifles accuracy wise. Its one of the very few firearms I'm glad I got rid of.

Yeah.. the cover is shifting around a little..screws are probably loosening up slightly...The cover is slotted for the rear screw which doesn't fit tightly through the receiver..the scope mounting rib on the cover can be formed at an angle to the bore and cause another set of problems..also there are no slots in the mount rib to keep the mounts from shifting...I’ve wanted to put some kind of aperture sight on mine but with the cover problems the only thing I can see to do is drill the cover and screw directly into the nylon..Mine with the factory sights will hold a silver dollar @ 50yd and that's with bulk Rem hollow points..

A good test would be to screw some thickish ally plates to the sides and see if it behaves.

I have never had a problem with a wandering zero on my Nylon 66 - but I use the issue iron sights only, since the rifle is dedicated to the fine art of dump rat shooting, where the ranges are measured in feet.

How did you solve the issue of rat gut backsplash at that range? Move to round nose solids only?Pete44ru wrote:... since the rifle is dedicated to the fine art of dump rat shooting, where the ranges are measured in feet.

Hmm, I had a cheapy scope on my first one, and can't really remember any problems with the POI shifting, but I may jnust not have been smart enough to realize at the time. I haven't scoped my new/used one yet. But it does pretty darned good with the iron sights even with my old eyes. I might get around to scoping it this weekend. But whenever I do, I'm gonna check this out. Say keep it cool and shoot first thing in the morning at the range, then let it warm up with the heat of the day and shoot it again.

I've always wanted to saw off the rear sight and try a barrel-mounted scope base like the one used with the Remington-Browning 22 Auto.
