Pretty dumb to lay a rifle like that or any gun for that matter in the dirt/sand/ash like that.

As for the paw prints -- pretty big.

You should see Phil's other guns. I give it 6 months and that rifle won't have a lick of finish on it. They're hard on guns up there. He's even harder. Bet Doug sorta cringed at what he made laying in the sand

Notice the black tape on the end of the barrel, with some spare tape just behind the sight ramp. I did the same thing with the 338 when I was tramping around in wet country up north.

So whats the big deal about laying the gun on the ground? I do it all the time, they've never self destructed.

Cool! I didn't know Turnbull made a miniature. I've got to get one for my grandson.

:D  Yeah Phil is really rough on his guns, he regularly uses his rifles as wading staffs in the rivers up there. He does keep them clean and running meticulously. He has to, his life and his clients depend on it. Thanks for the picture, Tom

Beautiful color case hardening. Those paw prints would have me a little concerned. I like to read, and I would be afraid that the bear would have heard that Readers Digest, but Writers Cramp.

If its Sheep River Outfitters, then yes.

I remember the first lever that he used that Dave Scovill featured in an article in Rifle. It was a 375 Hawk/Scovill Browning M95 Win IIRC. Phil will use them to steady himself in a river - butt-down in the river like a walking stick. Oh yeah, he's tough on em.

Is that "enough" gun? Just kidding, I know that the 45-70 has taken all sorts of large and toothy critters, but still, a 105 would be a nice companion, wouldn't it?

I don't understand the issue with laying guns down on dirt, wet sand, lava rocks, or whatever. If I had a dollar for every time one of my old Winchesters "hit the dirt" I'd prob'ly be able to buy another. I don't carry a velvet pad around in the field, so they get laid down or propped on what ever's handy. No problem.
