Model 92 mainspring replacement

Post by B-92 Steven »

I have two model 92 carbines, one Rossi 92 16 inch barrel .45 colt, the other a Browning B92 20 inch barrel .44 magnum. The browning is very rough compared to the Rossi. I have in my posession Steve Young's Rossi dvd, safety plug, ejector spring, replacement mag follower. After viewing the dvd and replacing the parts, I am convinced the Browning B92 can be helped by replacing the hammer mainspring. I have not taken the Browning apart yet, so I am guessing/assuming this is a fix.
Brownell's web site has Rossi & Navy Arms '92 rifle reduced power mainsprings. I have looked at pictures on Leverguns.com and I believe with some minor cutting they will work. Is my assumption near correct?
I am inviting all thoughts and ideas to help smooth out the Browning action. The Rossi has been great, the Browning only so-so. Thank you for your time and cooperation.

Steven,

My B92 was hard to cycle, and trigger pull was a little stiff. Two things really helped me out:

(1.) Cutting a couple of coils off of the hammer/ mainspring
(2.) Bending one of the "whiskers" of the trigger spring, and disabling the other one

Polishing the tip of the hammer, where it contacts the underside of the breechbolt, helps the take away drag, as does polishing the underside of the breechbolt. Plenty of "dry working" (NOT dry firing) of the lever & trigger engagement works, too. ...of course, shooting the snot out of the rifle works, too. :D

Here is my B92, with a Rossi lever on it. :!: :

A Browning B-92 will slick-up nicer than a Rossi.

I own both in 44, and there is quite a difference.

The Rossi has had all springs replaced & tuned. The B-92 tuned with all stock springs.

Both shoot very well and are keepers. The Rossi however out-shoots the B-92 in distance, past 100 yards. And both feed & cycle 44 specials & 44 mag. 240 gr. Semi-wad cutters.

The Rossi is a CAS/SASS side match winner for long range events.
The B-92 is a back-up piece to my Uberti 73 carbine.

Also both are sighted the same, Marbles tang sight & a Marbles folding Semi-buckhorn barrel sight. Tang sights are adjusted for 100 yards. Barrel buckhorn sighted in, dead-on at 50 yards on the Rossi. And 25 yards on the B-92.

Hagler and Dude, thank you for your thoughts and advice. I can change parts, put gunsmithing is a new adventure for me. I am looking to do as little disassembling as possible.

Send it to South-East Tejas. Steve Young will make it an unbelievable piece of fine operating Firearm hardware.

Hagler (Shawn), just read my e-mail. Thank you, but I down-loaded a manual two months ago. Thank you for your help.
