OT -- Thoughts on Tokarev?

Post by alnitak »

I was in the the local gun shop yesterday and saw a TT-33 (Tuka-Tokarev). What caught my eye is that they had ammo for it -- 1260 rounds for ... $80!! Wow! At that price, I can shoot all day, year-round. And, you can purchase a Tokarev (not all models) with a C&R.

It seems the Tokarev started in 1930 (TT-30) and was produced through 1958, (they started manufacturing the military replacement -- Makarov? -- in 1951). It's a Browning-based design, and looks like a smaller, rounded 1911 in many respects. Holds eight in the mag.

The trigger was pretty rough, though it broke cleanly, and I understand that they had to retrofit a safety on it to import into the U.S. Apparently, recoil with the 7.62x25mm cartridge is similar to a 9mm.

For a plinking gun, what are your thoughts? For about $250, is it in or out of the collection? Go the Makarov route instead?

The guns have the feel of the Colt 1903 and 1908 hammerless pocket (albeit with a hammer) and are neat mechanically. The cartridge is pretty cool, too. Get twice as much ammo as you think you'll want.

I have the Chinese copy in 9mm. I even carried it for a while.

The recoil isn't too snappy, feels fairly comfortable in my hand, cheap (corrosive) surplus ammo. Not bad little handguns based on the mag or two I fired from a friend's.

Plus that 7.62 Tok round is hellbent for leather velocity-wise.

Do some looking around, there is a recall on a certain batch of imports due to a faulty safety but that's all I can recall offhand about that situation and I can't hit my usual haunts from work (other than here).

IIRC the early ChiCom import Toks came in without the add on safety if you really want to get one in the original design but I hear good things about the Romanians.

I'll end up with one eventually but since I replaced the Mak with a cz82 I can't help you on that part of the debate.

I have been pondering them myself again recently due to the ammo prices. Back in the early '90s I had a WWII vintage Soviet Tokarev and foolishly sold it off. In generally that are nice and flat, tough and dependable, if sometimes rather unrefined (depending on manufacture).

My dad has about a dozen of them. Excellent pistols and that bullet is really moving.

A few months back after much consideration I purchased a Romanian Tokarev with a can of 1210 rounds of ammunition.I really like the pistol and the cartridge. They are much more than 25 yard pistols.I shoot mine regularly at 100 yards with quite good accuracy.
Recently a distributor had a special of a Romanian Tokarev and can of ammunition for $250.That was a no brainer so I now own two of these wonderful pistols and mucho ammunition.
I have had absolutely NO misfeeds or any kind of problems with either one. They are compact, economical, sturdy and accurate. Can't ask for anything better. When I carry I now carry a Tokarev.1480FPS is nothing to sneeze at.

The recoil is a bit snappy, and the blast pretty impressive. The grip tended to make the web between my thumb and forefinger sore; but that varies from hand to hand. It was an interesting gun, but I didn't shed a tear when I sold mine.

The Classic Arms website has them in again. Not quite as good of a deal as what Stan got, but still pretty good!
