Cimarron "El Dorado" Hoop-Lever '92

Post by Dino »

I just thought I'd share a few pics of my new 1892 "El Dorado" .357
I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but the action feels really smooth right out of the box and the quality of the fit and finish looks pretty impressive. If it shoots as good as it looks, I'll be very happy. :)

The 92 really needs a bigger than standard loop for cold weather hunting. That gun looks good!

Fine looking rifle in a great round, enjoy it. Looks like no safety.

So cool, but with a 20" barrel, my arms wouldn't be long enough to twirl it! I can twirl my 16" one!!! 8)

Thanks guys. :)
I do believe Chiappa actually makes them.
I looked at the Rossi models too, but this one had all the features I wanted ... a big hoop lever, saddle ring, case hardened reciever, 20" round barrel, and NO safety. Besides, it just seemed to be a better quality gun IMO.

Hope to get out and shoot it soon!

I saw the gun on GunBroker advertised from a gunshop in Ohio.
The seller was asking $800 but I negotiated with him and was able to get it for $750 (including shipping).
Going through GunBroker also enabled me to buy the gun without having to pay state taxes.
All in all, I was able to save over $100, so I'm pretty happy. :)

The gun has all the features I was looking for, right out of the box!

Sure looks good. :D :D :D
I want to know if they got the chamber and bore dimensions correct and if it shoots accurately. Also how well it feeds with factory equivalent ammo.
Many problems are due to bullet shape in hand loads and not the rifles fault.

I have been looking at that rifle too. Will wait for your range report. :D

Regarding features, you forgot to mention the period correct ladder sight--shared with their other 92 carbines. Our very own NKJ has been working with the Chiappa folks on the new 86 model--to make it right out of the chute. It wouldn't surprise me if they've also taken some feedback on the 92s to improve some of the bits he found wanting on early examples.

Yeah, I totally forgot to mention the ladder sight. :)

BTW ... I just noticed today that the staple for the saddle ring swivels.
You will notice this by it's orientation in my pics.
It doesn't look like it broke, as there is no second hole there to mount the other side.
Most saddle rings I've seen on other rifles are connected on both sides. :?:
Can you tell me ... is this by design? Or is there something missing?

Thanks

The examples (of Chiappa) 92s I,ve seen have the traditional 92 SR two hole/pronged staple--I think!!

Congratulations on your M92 and thanks for the pictures.

With a smooth action, those features, and looking good it sounds like I should look at one for me.

How it feeds cast, from some of our favorite molds, could be another big plus. And that front sight looks stout; I want to see how it works for me or if my eyes want a brass bead there.

Chiappa 92 here has a single-hole "staple".

Thanks Dennis!
I didn't think it was suppose to swivel like that.

Get this ...
I emailed Cimarron and was told that it should be connected on both sides and that it was probably "broken". Then they asked for pics.

When I sent pics, I explained that there was no second hole for attachment, nor was there any sort of plug where it may have broken off. I then later received a response telling me that it the staple was only connected on one side and that it had a nut on the inside that must have come loose. Then they simply gave me a telephone number where I could send it out for repair.

Huh? The gun is only a week old and has never been fired!
I went on to explain that I felt it should be covered under warranty and I shouldn't have to pay for freight (both ways) and the labor to fix their defective part. I also stressed my concern over this "loose nut" that could possibly work it's way entirely off and potentially damage the internal workings of the gun, or even worse ... pose the risk of bodily injury to myself and/or others. Again, their response was to ask me to send it to a "gunsmith". Then they were kind enough to provide a telephone number that was not in service.

When I got home, I took a closer look and the staple was simply threaded into the receiver.
There was no "nut". Just a couple turns of the saddle ring, and it was nice and tight again.

I sincerely hope I NEVER have to deal with Cimarron customer service EVER AGAIN.
My bad for not taking a closer look before contacting them, but my exchange with them just proves that they have absolutely no clue about the products they sell, nor do they stand behind their products or honor any sort of warranty.

Lesson learned. :)

I suspect where that my carbine, it would be converted to the correct staple type retainer post haste.
If not then it would get a shot of LocTite to make sure it stayed put.
