This will be better than the Superbowl! Wish I was there. Never been to TX.
Re: Leverguns Hog Hunt Update (Day 1)
I think we were 14 hogs down, 3 rams down, 5 misses on hogs, 2 hits - unrecovered.
Huntress took a nice ram with a shot right between the eyes as it stared at us. Will shot his two hogs between the eyes as well. Everyone else did a great job! There was some fine shooting. Congratulations to all the hunters!

Looks like a large time was had by all! Did Lil Huntress shoot that ram with her new levergun?
Re: Leverguns Hog Hunt NOW w PHOTOS
YES DAVE - Lil' Huntress used her new rifle. A ram was bedded down and looking right at us. I told her to shoot it right between the eyes. From the angle we had she did just that, hitting it in the nose and sending the bullet into the brain. She worked the lever and shot again "just in case". I think she just wanted to shoot her rifle again!

I like that story! That kid is a natural.

I took 5 shots from a scoped .44 mag to kill my first hog. The second took only one shot from my Puma .480. I added an insurance shot with the Puma, but that wide flat point 425 grain cast lead slug from Cast Performance did what 5 .44s didn't do. It knocked the hog off its feet instantly.

It could have been....there was more than enough water! Couldn't get the boats between the trees, though. I'm surprised no one got bit by a catfish.

Who you calling a "City Pig"? The prey or the predator? I guess it fits, either way.
My wife is going to kill me when she gets home from church. I think there is a pound of sand in the washing machine after I pulled my coveralls out. I could clean it out myself, but I like a little fight every now and then.

Re: Leverguns Hog Hunt NOW w PHOTOS
When you are hot, your'e hot!
After slogging to the box blind in the dark, Colin and I set up and waited for shooting light. Somewhere off in the dark, someone shot before I could even see the sights on my 1895 .405. About 7 am the grey dawn gave enough light to see the front sight and the feeder went off at 7:05. Not long afterward, Colin saw hogs slipping in through the woods to our left and we waited until about 20 were milling about the feeder clearing. Finally a decent sized hog stopped for a few seconds, giving me a broadside shot - boom/flop and it was down. This caused a stir that made it difficult for Colin to get a clear shot before the pigs melted back into the trees.
We left my dead hog there and just sat still for 20 minutes and a group of hogs began to drift back to the clearing. Just as Colin was about to shoot one, BOOM - someone fired at something off to our left and our hogs headed back into the timber. We soon saw a few back in the woods to our right, but there was no clear shot. In a few minutes, the landowner, Brian, and Joe pulled up on an ATV . When Joe saw that we had only one hog, he quickly got Colin up on the ATV and Brian took him back where Joe had spotted some hogs bedded near a round bale.
Joe and I examined my hog while Colin stalked to within 30 yards of the bedded game and when they made a break for cover, he executed one with a perfect Texas Heart Shot; the 55 grain .223 went between the hams and made short work of the vitals before it ran out of steam. The pig squealed and kicked a few times and then we could hear high-fives through the woods. Brian hauled our hogs back to the skinning area where they weighed in at 109 and 118 pounds - perfect eating porkers and just what we were looking for. We were done by 8 am and able to relax and enjoy the plentiful vittles and visit with other folks as they brought their game into camp.

Looks great! For a hunting camp, what more could one want... it resembles my driveway far to closely to be comfortable.

Re: Leverguns Hog Hunt NOW w PHOTOS
I really need to think about changing my aftershave. I was in that elevated stand less than 25 yards from the feeder, and the hogs either smelled me or saw me each and every time. They have better eyesight than what I have been told. It took all day for them to finally forget about me and give me an open shot that wouldn't have to go through brush or maybe hit 2 or 3 hogs. The 200 grain Nosler JHPs I was using just didn't do what I hoped. It took 5 shots for the pig to quit fighting. The first shot was through the neck and the hog nearly exsanguinated, but th started running and I shot 3 more times to stop him. The fifth shot was a Coup De Grace behind the ear to stop the kicking and biting the dead hog was still doing. Later that afternoon after everyone had got their animals, some of us were wanting to get a second. It was not too bad a price, so I joined that group. I used my Puma in .480 Ruger. I was using a 425 WFN from Cast Performance powered by IMR4227. I was in a blind 50 yards from the feeder. When the hogs came in they ignored me and went to feeding. When they separated, I chose one and put it down with one shot. It flipped off its feet as if it had been hit with a sledgehammer. The pig was laying there squealing, so I walked up and put a shot behind its ear. I have used a cast lead slug before and nearly lost the animal, but it was round nose. I am can see how matching your bullet to the animal makes a big difference. By the way, the second pig was one&a-half times bigger than the first.
