savage 99 30-30
Any body have n OLDER savage 99 in 30-30. How does it shoot cast bullets. What's one worth in decent condition?
Re: savage 99 30-30
I do not have one but I shot one with a forum member in California almost a year ago now. I recall shooting the RCBS 180 at distances of 300 yards with good results. Shorter distances were monotonous, the reason we shot at the longer distance. I would like to have a 99/30-30 as they are fine rifles.

The first question I have is, how old is old? Is it a Utica NY gun, a Chicopee Falls MA gun or a Westfield MA gun. This will go a long way in setting a value to start with. Second, Is it a takedown? and is there any checkering on the stock or forend? This will help determine if it is a deluxe model. The Savage 99 has (in my experience lately) been holding their value and selling better than most WInchesters at our store and on the internet. If you can provide a little more info, I can put you in the ballpark.....
Also, is there any evidence of it being refinished? If so, its value is in the $400 to $600 range as it is considered a shooter and not a collector.....
I just purchased a 99 that was made in 1912 in .303 Savage, a Utica NY gun, takedown, for $400, but it had been completely refinished and the stock had been handcarved. Nicely done, but all collector value on it is gone.
PS... i will post pics when I get a chance....

This one factory letters from 1900. (on the bottom) Half rd/oct and..............she shoots with the best of 'em. When I say that, its not a 1" gun but 2-3" @ 100 is easy. She will bust the 10" gong at 2-300 meters with boring regularity with a 170 Saeco gc at 1800.

Re: savage 99 30-30
I have been shooting cast bullets from Savage 99's for over 10 years. It does not seem to matter if the gun is a takedown or solid frame. The condition of the bore will matter...large pits or bad spots will make groups suffer. My favorite bullet is Lyman mould 311413. This is a spitzer 169gr. bullet with gas check. 16grs. of 4227 will give excellent groups. I believe the velocity is approx. 1600fps. Loading 50 rounds cost about $6.00 at most, and you can have loads of fun! The guns I shoot this load from are over 80 years old and groups run about an inch at 50 yards. I use peep sights not the factory open sights. Another mould to use is 311291 this is a round nose bullet.

Made in 1923. Probably refinished as it looks pretty nice. Bore is good.
