Rossi model 92 ss

Post by 1988rrc »

the local gun store has a rossi model 92 stainless steel .45 cal rifle for $300.00
its in great shape, with no safety button on top of the receiver, sold by navy arms.
this appears to be a good price compaird to gun auction web sites; what do you think?

Just have them send it to me, if you don't want it...

Rossi's are slick, durable, and just plain "fun" - like the Winchesters they are based on.

.45 Colt is anything from a lightweight kid/girlie 'cowboy' round, to a better-than-.44Mag 'thumper', in the 92 action.

Stainless steel is forgiving, tough, and easy to 'finish' if you machine, drill & tap, or otherwise abuse your gun.

So - what's not to like...? 8)

Of all the Rossi's imported to the states the Navy Arms version is the only one that has for real Walnut stocks. Back when Navy was importing them their guns cost on average about $100 more than the other importers Rossi's because of their Walnut stocks.
All the current Rossi's have the ugly bolt top safety's too. This make that stainless Navy/Rossi much more desirable.

I picked up the '92 this afternoon and just ordered the DVD and a few misc. parts from NKJ.
After I clean up the finger prints and do a general clean up, I will post some pictures.

thanks for the help and push. I think I'm going to like this one.

Not to hijack, but what is the safety NKJ referenced? Also, what about the current Cimarrons? Do they have the safety, and do they come with walnut stocks?

I, for one, don't understand the aversion to the bolt safety. I just leave mine on "fire" and forget it. Is there something I'm missing?

IMO, it detracts from the classic look of a lever gun. For all practical purposes, you are correct, just put it on "fire" and forget about it. I know some people that have had problems with the switch getting loose and not staying in the correct position, though. For the most part it doesn't affect the function of the rifle, but a bunch of people, including myself, just find no need for them. After all, lever guns went for 120+ yrs. with no safety except a half cock. Then lawyers started getting rich.

The rest of the story is the Rossi 92's that are sent to other country's don't have it. Rossi only uses the ugly safety just on the guns destined to the USA.
The complaints I'm seeing are two fold but related. If you use the gun moving in heavy cover the safty gets bumped on or off too easily. Customer tell me they have missed shots on game because it was on when shouldn't have been. The Cowboy action shooters report the same. It gets accidently bumped on and they end up with several 5 second penalty misses because of it. I had one feller tell me his got hung up in the safe mode because of crud in/under the detent ball/spring.(if you look close you will see, it's too exposed) He said it looked like tree bark or something simular got in it. He remembered moving through some vines.
The add-on safety came about in the late 90's on the first LSI imported Rossi 92 guns. As these guns get older I suspect there will be simular problems cropping up.

Update:

Finally got the rifle stripped down; it is very dirty inside and needs more than a 'general' clean up. This rifle was shot a lot. Parts have not been modified at all, I will make the part modifications per the NKJ video. Will post pictures later.
