OT: Winter Bicycle Rifle Project Progress

Post by Pete44ru »

My Winter project, .22 Mag NAA Bicycle Rifle's coming along, little by little.

So far, after I pulled the issue barrel and bought a take-off stainless Ruger 77/22Mag barrel as a donor online, I've managed (along with "doing" the Holidays and hunting all Fall) to get the shortened (17 1/2") and turned-down donor barrel installed in the frame.

I have the skeleton folding stock components bent to shape, ready for heli-arcing together and attachment to the gripframe - I'm going to first shorten the barrel tenon & fit the cylinder/gap to get it back firing again, first.

I'm still undecided about the sighting - whether or not to dovetail the front of the barrel (where I left it a tad thicker than the barrel itself) for a front sight and install an XS peep stem or Skinner LoPro peep in the cyl frame top strap - or - to mount a very miniature red dot sight I found (about the size of a LaserLyte), on the rear of the barrel.
I'm leaning toward the iron sights, though.

Decisions/decisions - that's where a LOT of the enjoyment comes from, in doing one of these conversions.

Oh, well - no wine, before it's time.

Here's a few pics (keep in mind, it's still a "work in progress")

I really like that.

Can't wait for the "what's it good for" posts to chime in...

They DO make a little laser sight for the NAA's that is about the size of a Keflex (antibiotic) capsule, and mounts astride the topstrap.

Question: Do you have to do any specific paperwork (NFA type stuff) for that, since it involves sort of making a handgun into a folding rifle?

[Do you have to do any specific paperwork (NFA type stuff) for that, since it involves sort of making a handgun into a folding rifle?]

FWIW - Legally, there no difference between a non-folding rifle and a folding rifle - they're both rifles, perfectly legal as long as they meet the current Federal requirement of a 16" barrel length and a 26" OAL with any folding stock extended.

It's perfectly legal to convert a handgun to a rifle for one's own use, as opposed to converting for sale - No NFA status, no fees, no permits, no nothing.

What's NOT legal, w/o BATF permits/licences/tax/etc, is to either:

Convert a firearm originally manufactured as a rifle into a handgun
- or -
reconvert back to a handgun, a handgun that has previously been converted into a rifle (as I'm doing).

BTW - All I've done so far, legally, is to install a longer barrel on my pistol - and there's no regulated minimum or "maximum" handgun barrel lengths.
It's not a rifle until a rifle buttstock, or the fitting(s) for the rifle buttstock, are installed on the handgun frame.
After a handgun's been converted into a rifle, it's no longer legally a handgun, even with the folding stock taken off for maintainence or repair - any more than (say) a Remington 700 would be with it's stock removed.

It's a good thing that there's no tax on fun, though.................................

Is the NAA barrel threaded or a press fit or pinned? You've now given me an idea for all those cast off 10-22 barrels I've seen for sale!

It might be hard to make out in the middle/second pic, above, but the issue NAA barrel was threaded & Loctited.

It spun readily "off", once I grasped it in a bench vise between leather pads; and padded the cylinder frame with a BCS (beer can shim - an empty, pounded flat & wrapped over both sides of the frame) while I grasped/turned the frame off the barrel with a pair of visegrip pliers.

Certainly there is no hunting like the hunting of man and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never really care for anything else thereafter.

With reference to the current administration; If ya greased one end of it...

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.
