OT- Taurus TCP/ .380

Post by 2ndovc »

Looking for a new pocket pistol.

Jeff Quinn had a positive article on the new Taurus TCP on Gunblast.

Anyone else have their hands on one yet?

It's in the running with the Keltec and the Ruger LCP.
I want something smaller than my G26 but a little more firepower than
my little Cobra .38spl.

I know you didn't ask, but I don't see the .380 as more powerful than a .38 Special......

I shot a Buddies KelTec .380 a couple weeks ago....man, that thing stung worse than my 629...not recoil, just the sting.

I had a j-frame in .32 H&R. Liked it but I like the way the little autos can hide.

Just exploring all options.

We have one in the shop. A bit bigger than the KelTec or LCP so might fit a hand better. I don't see it as much different from the KelTec or LCP. I'm sticking with my Colt Cobra.

My grandson Jerry3 has the KelTec and carries it among others and my daughter in Arizona just bought a KelTec with the laser that she like real well. I have shot his and after a few rounds it does have a little sting but for defence I don't think I would even notice it. It is very accurate with him shooting it.

Only the Kel-Tec will fit into my Levi 560's little right side "watch pocket" Kel-Tec for me!

I like that pocket because it makes the gun ride tight and high.(tee shirt out,no one ever knows, and you can sit with comfort)only the tiny grip just barely partly sticks out!

I held one at the last gun show. A little bigger and heavier than my P3AT.
Kind regards,

I like the idea that it's just a bit bigger. My hands aren't huge but I have long fingers. I have a hard time with the j-frames.

I have a 2 1/2" round butt model 66 that I have a hard time holding on to with the factory grips.
With the rubber grips installed it's as big as my Glock.
For some reason the LCP fit my hand fairly well though I haven't fired one.
Looking to get my hands on the Taurus to see how it fits.
I've never had a Taurus but for what ever reason I like the way the TCP looks.

Jason,
Check out the Feb issue of American Rifleman......they tested nine .380 ccw pistols.

Rohrbaugh R380 was best with no malfunctions, new out of the box.
Taurus 738 TCP was second with only 2 malfunctions, new out of the box.

All the others tested needed extensive break in before being reliable.

I had one of those. nice pistols. Wouldn't mind another.
Another one that's been floating around my mind is an old Colt '03.

Too many choices!

Now you're talking! I don't know what the .380 versions are going for but I know the last time I was looking it was more than I could reasonably afford. The little .32s are still fairly reasonable though...

I have the Ruger LCP. It comes with an extender for your ring finger on the magazine.
The Ruger is very easy to shoot and surprisingly accurate. Easy to conceal, too. I carry it in every situation where a G 19 is too big.

If you want more firepower and larger capacity, look at the micro 9mm's -- Rohrbaugh (about the size of a P3AT) and the Kahr PM9. I would choose either one over the LCP or the TCP for a variety of reasons -- caliber, sights, reliability, etc.

Also, check out the new DiamondBack .380 (http://www.diamondbackfirearms.com/) or the Kahr P380 if you are stuck on a .380. I understand DB is coming out with a micro-9mm as well.

This is my pick for the micro 380's:

Image

And Bud's has em for $299 delivered. I am finding myself checking Bud's first when looking for a particular gun...

I've got the Keltec .32 and its been a good little gun but I'd like a bit more oomph than the 32 ACP.

He grabbed this 9mm Star (31P)16rds he said try this.OMG that gun shot about the best 16rds I have ever shot out of a semi pistol.I just looked at him  He said they are about the most Heavy Duty best shootin guns in his shop.needless to say I grabbed that too.(that is one of my anti break-in discouragers.( have 16 1400fps Buffalo Bore 115gr JHP's in her) Love the Star!

S&W has a new Bodyguard that is just like the Taurus with an integral laser system. I like that one for a 380.

With my job a full size auto is not an option.
Unfortunately.
I have many of those to choose from.
What I don't have is any small, concealable
handguns except my Cobra derringer.

Getting into some rough areas with the new territories.

If I had my way I'd sling my model 97 over my shoulder and go about my business.
However that won't work either.

Andrew,

I was at our local Gander Mtn. Picking up my .35 Rem/ 336 Marlin
while this "fellow" was looking at all the small autos.

He was told by the counter guy, a pretty knowledgable fellow, that the
Desert Eagle, while all steel and a relaible pistol, bites very hard on even
the smallest hands.
This is one of the few guys that I'd deferr to in his knowlegde of modern firearms.

Hammer or slide bite? I'd be curious to compare it size-wise to one of the old AMT Backup .380s...

Slide bite.

There's not a lot of space between the upper half of the back strap and the slide on the D.E.

I'm not wild about the AMTs either.
The few i've seen at the range & elsewhere have been dismal.

The CCW class I took here in OH one of the guys had an AMT.
He couldn't get through one mag w/o a jam or failure to feed.

The guy was a 'tard anyway. One of those "can't wait to shoot somebody" AH's
Anyway, I told him he was better off with a rock and a big rubber band than that
thing.
Little fellow was not amused. :D
Didn't say anything and stomped off.

Mesc,

thats the Sig P238. This particular example is not mine, i am still saving :D . I have been reading every piece of info i can get my hands on about these. I have been carrying an Officers size 1911, but there are a ton of times it gets left in the truck because it is still pretty big. I don't get this excited about "new" firearms very often and prefer to spend my money, like most of the rest of you do ----- on wheelguns and leverguns and various other "obsolete" firearms, but this little thing has me drooling
I want a "deep cover" type firearm and almost drunk-bid on a Seecamp after i coon-fingered one at the range (would still be my choice for the ultimate in concealment also) , but the better part of reason caught up with me and i decided i wanted to hold out for something i could potentially have some pride of ownership in as well. I am a big guy and my daily dress requirements are business casual , so i can probably conceal a bit bigger sidearm than the Seecamp effectively. As well, the 238 has functional sights and operates very similar to a "real" 1911. It is kind of the modern re-incarnation of the Mustang, without all the bugs.

That said, this months American Rifleman review stated they had some incidents and it needed to be broken in like most pocket autos. But this is a pistol i would actually enjoy putting a few rounds downrange with. The following link to a youtube review was done by an impartial guy who is not on Sig's payroll and it is fairly comprehensive.

I cant believe i dont have one of these yet, but the harsh realities of a slow economy are finally hitting me. Perhaps by the time spring rolls around and i need to start dressing lighter, i will have one of these of my own to post , but in the meantime, the 3.5" 1911 works OK with winter wear
