Model 92 Metamorphosis

Post by Pete44ru »

After several months of shooting & pondering, I decided that I'd rather have a standard lever loop on my .357 Rossi - similar to the ones on my other leverguns.

Thanks to the co-operation of a fellow levergunner this past week, I was able to swop the "Big Loop" lever that came on my 16" Rossi M92 for a standard lever.

The rifle went from this:

to this:

in about 5 mins, after I got the lever.

Thanks, Shawn !

Now.............., I'm ponderin' installing a forend cap ILO the barrel band, and shortening the mag tube to a "button" mag.
Hmmmmm.............................. ;)

Looks like a good choice IMHO.

Pete,

:!: :D You are welcome! :D :!:

As soon as we are feeling better, I will put up some photos of my rifle, with your old lever on it.

I've ALWAYS changed my guns to suite ME, over the years.

This one's been changed a few times already, since I bought it last Spring.

First, I ditched the bolt-top safety, and made a replacement plug.

Then, I made a brass magazine follower to replace the plastic fantastic issue follower.

In Sept, I swapped a fellow forum member to get a Williams 5D receiver sight, meant for a Winchester Model 94AE - which I mounted atop the receiver side walls just ahead of the locking lugs.

This week, the lever swop.

I figger, after shortening the mag to a button, and changing the forend barrel band to a cap, it'll look a lot more like the .32-20 Winchester Model 1892 I had a few years ago that coulda passed for a Winchester Model 53.

Changes make the world go 'round, I guess.

Last week I bought a Rossi M92 stainless in 38/357. I didn't really want stainless as out here in the desert there's hardly any humidity and I don't plan on carrying it IWB. But that's all they had and the price was right.

What can I expect from this rifle in terms of reliability, glitches, etc.?

Comments deeply appreciated.

I have a couple Rossi stainless guns - both have functioned flawlessly and smoothly so far (a few hundred rounds each). If you don't like the 'shiny' of stainless, various bead-blastings can be done, or you can just work it with fine grit sandpaper if you are crazy like me.

NKJ can tell you the spare parts to get and what the 'weak links' are - he's got a DVD I keep meaning to buy soon, too.

Pete - love to see what you do with these. I really never change anything. Well, maybe a couple of times.

As a fan of button mags, that is something I would like to see. How about a rifle buttstock?

The standard lever looks much better too, IMO. - :D

Forgot to mention that mine has the standard lever. And thanks, Hobie for the Scotchbrite tip, but I think I'll just leave it alone for now. AJMD429: Again thanks for the suggestion about bead blasting. Unfortunately, my buddy with the fancy bead-blasting machine isn't speaking to me since I made an unkind comment about one of his 2CV Citroens.

I was going to shoot it again today, but the California storm is now over Arizona. (well at least I wouldn't have to worry about rust).

Pete, and everyone else,

I finally got a picture of my '92, with your big lever installed. Here it is, with its fiddle-back, quilted, Brazilian wood (and its siblings):

From the left-to- the right:
[*]Henry H001L, .22LR, bought new, in 2003
[*]Browning B92, .44 Magnum, mfd. 1981; bought from pawnshop 2005; installed Rossi big loop lever
[*]EMF Hartford/ Rossi 92, .357 Magnum; bought from Levergunner Bill in Oregon in 2007, custom-altered for me, by my friends Tycer & Yancey
[*]Winchester 94, .30-30, made in 1975; pawnshop rust-bucket, after clean-up & preservation; added long forend wood

Obligatory photo of the levers:

Pete, the large loop lever realy makes the little Rossi feel right to me. Thanks, again, for swapping with me. :D

I did the same (swapped the large loop on a trapper for a regular) but the recipient of the loop lever/donor of regular lever was one of my standard 20" 44 SRCs! Just had to have one that looked like Lucas McCain's,--it's that "D" type vs the elongated John Wayne type--as impractical as it might be. Generally, I prefer the standard levers though.

As far as the reliability of the Rossi model 92s, mine is great. I haven't slicked it up yet. I think that next year after the trip to Africa I will have two projects. First, send my rifle to NKJ for a tune-up, and second, save up for the Bighorn Armory model 89. The tune-up on the Rossi is first and foremost. I think it works great, but there is nothing wrong with having a good gunsmith make sure it is working at its best.

My experience with Rossi reliability (and enjoyment) has been great. About a dozen of them since 1978/80 or so, all pre safety Interarms and EMF. Oh, one errant LSI, but they're all basically the same underneath.
