A friend has a Savage 1899C for sale that was made in either 1901 or 1902. It is a 303 Savage with the half octagon barrel. I don't think it has ever been sanded and the wood is in pretty decent shape other than a few dings and some paint spots on it. There is some rust on the barrel, the foreend has two small splits in it, there is some paint on the barrel where it leaned against a wall for years. It has a shotgun style butt instead of the crescent butt that most seem to have. The bore is dark, but the rifling is pronounced and isn't pitted. It might clean up fairly well. I know nothing about 99's as far as value and there is a wide range of values on the auction sites. Is the 303 Savage caliber more or less desirable than some of the other calibers? I'm ready to receive the straight scoop from some of the Savage experts that hang out here!! Thanks in advance!
I'd give the folks at the Savage Collectors forum at http://www.24hourcampfire.com a shout on this. Lots of good information there. As for the .303 Savage, it's a tough one to a certain extent. Ammunition and components are available, but they tend to be on the pricey side. The cartridge is - for lack of a better description - a variation on the .30WCF, using a 190 grain bullet at about 1,900 to 2,000 feet per second.

I would definately check what they are SELLING for on the auctions. I would clean up the rust spots with some very fine steel wool and oil - be very very ginger - just hit the spots enough to remove any rust and stop. The wood is great - leave it alone! Nice rifle. A 99 collector will really appreciate it!
