Just been to the Winchester web site. Their model 92 "Short" as they call it is quite appealing. Why didn't they go ahead and call it by what they've called this gun in the past? That is: "Short Rifle."
I might have to get one in 357. Oughta go good with my Winchester 92, 45 Colt w/24" bbl. The Browning B-92 is a great gun but the barrel band is some kind of aluminum--I think--and it's shine is too much for the rest of the gun. It really is hard to understand why, when all else if perfect, they do this. Small thing but meaningful to me. The safety on the Winchester version does not bother me at all. I leave it on FIRE ! I also believe I like the dovetail hook-up between barrel and magazine better than the barrel band of the typical carbine.
When you don't need long distance shooting, these are the guns to take. No rifle I know of carrys as well as a model 92. Absolutely beautiful and wonderfully functional design. As most of you know, a baby 86. Both models are my favorites of all guns. (Model 71 too, of course.)
Kind of important for me to know how much longer Winchester will be offering this 92 Short. Anyone know? Still available, I assume.

FWIW, the Winchester website refers to the rifle as a short rifle in the text of the description, if not the heading - poor planning ?

I got so soured on the NEW Winchesters when i orders M1886's that I still have a bad taste in my mouth. We ordered 5 guns at $1000 each, out of the 4 would not shoot through a whole box of factory shells due to the rebounding hammer. All of the guns had to be converted to be reliable and that really sticks in my craw, $1000 for a gun that is designed NOT to work! So far every rebounding hammer Winchester i have shot gave varying hammer strike and every gun that was converted back to the old style hammer immediatly gave better groups. I have looked at the new M92's but until I can shoot one i'm not buying.
Re: Winchester 92; OT / my Colt experience
Bought a new SAA Colt. Shot ok but could not be re-assembled after cleaning. Called Colt & they treated me like a moron. "Send it back under waranty & we'll fix it within 90 days". Magnaport fixed it while I was standing there, pointing out poor Colt grinding work on cylinder.KCSO wrote:I got so soured on the NEW Winchesters . . . Embarassing to tell your wife her $1700 gift to you is a not up to Colt reputation. Even more embarrasting to admit I've never had problems with Norinco, Rossi and the other furrin stuff.

I've seen the same thing with some of their 92's as well. I used the Rossi fire control parts to convert it.KCSO wrote:I got so soured on the NEW Winchesters when i orders M1886's that I still have a bad taste in my mouth. Re: Winchester's model 92 (current)
Don, the aluminum bands on the Browning carbines can be swapped for steel Winchester bands pretty easily. I have some bands and have been meaning to change them, but at this point, they just dont bother me any more on my Browning.
I have a late 92 Winchester. I'm changing out the rebound and safety parts for Browning parts.

Re: Winchester's model 92 (current)
I have 1 of these rifles from around 2003 or 2004 I guess. .44 mag, 20" round bbl and rifle butt. I have never had a failure to feed or fire (have used different bullet profiles). It is also accurate. I installed a Williams peep on mine. Fit and finish on the gun are superb. I say buy 1 if your interested, you never know how long they'll be around.

The new Winchester model 92 short was a 2009 shot show special and is hard to find. They only made them if a dist. ordered some at the Shot Show. I called Winchester and they are not in current production. I want one also but have not had any luck. Just missed one at Cabelas, and even the auction sights don't seem to have any.
