OT- ? about single shot 22's

Post by Bigahh »

I have always wanted one of the older style single shot 22 long rifles. My brother has a Winchester from years ago, and I would love one. My question is..What brand may be available to buy, or the easiest for me to come across. Would love a Remington or Winchester, but what other brands are there?

I don't know who makes them now but if you could find a Winchester Mod 68 you can't go wrong. When I was growing up every kid had a single shot 22. Popular up here was a Cooey. They were a Canadian branch of Winchester and were famous (in Canada) for inexpensive 22s and single shot break action shot guns. Here is a picture of my Mod 68.

Still have my boyhood single shot .22 - Glenfield model 10. (1972)
Marlin still makes a similar gun and you may also consider the Henry Accu-bolt. If you want a Remington or especially a Winchester in nice shape, it could be pricey.
Winchester M94 30-30 (1980)
Winchester M70 Westerner 30-06 (1982)
Winchester M1 Garand (1942)
Too many others to list - hope to add more levers soon.

Try to find an Ithaca Model 49. They are a modified Martini action set up to mimic a lever action carbine. They must be cocked by hand (they have a hammer), and eject spent shells with great enthusiasm. They are an ideal first gun for a kid. (Or another fun .22 for a grown-up!)

Ithaca model 49s can be found for $100 or so and are worth every penny. Mine is 43 yrs old, has had untold hundreds of thousands of rounds through it, taught a dozen or more kids to shoot, and will still light kitchen matches at 50 feet.

I bought a brand new Cimarron Low Wall .22 Long Rifle with double set triggers, full crescent butt, checkered pistol grip stock, and a 30" octagon barrel.

Image

They are a very neat looking rifle, but very expensive and mine had a problem with the fly falling out of the mechanism, twice! I was able to repair it myself, and it is a joy to shoot.

This is my Uberti Low Wall set up for 22 BPCR. I have shot it all the way out to 300 yds with pretty good results. Fun to shoot and they are not hard to find. Its the basic model single trigger but I found it to be crisp and no creep, just right for target work.

Nice vid Bruce, they are good. Lots go for little money over here and they have very good triggers.
I had one years ago, they are a touch heavy in the field for hunting etc.

How much does an Ithaca model 49 weigh? I've been looking for a very lightweight 22 lever action.

Remington 510 Targetmaster - I have the 511 which is the same except 6-shot clip-feed. Of all my rifles, it's the most accurate under 100yds. Over 100yds it may be also but I can't see the target. They show up on Gunbroker often and not very expensive - $100-$200.

Stevens, Winchester, & Ballard made single shots, WITH LEVERS.......so you are kind of on topic.
Any of the old Remington 5"teen" series can be had for $75-$175 depending on how pretty they are. Have someone mount a couple of Weaver rimfire blocks, on the receiver, and you're good to go.

All of these are the much maligned 22 caliber. :D

You might want to consider narrowing down your field of view, from "a single shot.22" - and drill down to the specific type of single shot rifle you want, in order to make your search easier.

* Bolt-action - (many/many, new & used) Savage, Remington, Stevens, Winchester, Marlin and Mossberg to name only a few.

* Falling-block/Rolling block/tipping breechblock - (several/many, new & used) Browning, Savage/Varner, Remington, Winchester, Martini, Ithaca, Sharps, etc.

*Break-open - ( a few, new & used) Savage/Stevens, H&R/NEF, Rossi.

.

I don't have an exact weight, and since mine is scoped it won't tell me much. The receiver is aluminum, but it does have the faux mag tube, etc so it isn't as light as a Stevens favorite (which is also a neat gun. I have one about 100 yrs old, a smoothbore)..

The Varner is a quality piece. It has a match grade barrel on it and is scary accurate.Rear sight is a variation on a peep sight instead of the standard rear buckhorn.Mine of course is a take down.My first 22 was one of the early Savage Stevens favourites which of course was sold off years ago , the Varner is its replacement, they are head and shoulders above all the other Stevens favourites replicas and even the originals.

i had my old 510 taken apart...the stock was shattered. i noticed the receiver group is exactly square in length, height and width. i also noticed it looked like it would fit into a piece of alum channel i had...out came the calipers...it fit perfectly.

i simply drilled and tapped screws into the bottom of the receiver to secure it into the channel, and on top of the same square piece that the bi-pod is mounted to (it runs the full length of the stock), i had to mill a slot in the channel and solid stock for the trigger to pass thru, too. the angle brace at the butt is the same as the bi-pod mount stock. the rear elevation screw is made from stainless all-thread tapped in to the solid end of the butt. made the grip, forend panels and attached the recoil pad mount from scrap hard wood i had.

the scope is a Tech-Force, 4-12x44 air rifle scope with 1/8" click adjustments.

it's all drilled, trapped and shaped by hand in my shoppe and done with hand tools...(i used a table saw with a carbon tipped blade to cut the alum stock, though)

it's not a "tack driver" at fifty yards, but it is VERY accurate...i still haven't sorted out ammo it likes best, but the bulk Remington gold will hit a 12 gauge shot shell every shot from 25-35 yds every shot...

I still have my Marlin 101, its on the verge of classifying as an antique :o \
Never thought I'ld ever spend that much money on a 22, but I got ahold of one of the recent Winchester lowalls for about 650 what a joy it has been.
You can get a Uberti rolling block in 22, if you really want a cadilac of a 22 go with a C Sharps 75 or 85 lowall, not much more than one of the Italian imports...
Here's my lowall
