Online Firearm Manufacturer Warranty Registration?

Post by cshold »

Do most of you register your newer firearms
online with the manufacturer to activate the
warranties? I just got finished registering my
Cobra derringer on the Cobra website.
Hoping I did the smart thing by doing it that way.

Well, the last "new" gun I bought was back in 96 and they didn't have the on-line warranty registration then, so no I haven't. But as long as the connection is a secure one I don't see any problem with it. Snail mail or internet it gets done.

I bought my first new firearm (out of quite a few over the years) in 1965.

I've NEVER registered ANY for warranty purposes - and have only had to return a single one, in 2008, for repair/replacement.

I am especially loathe to do so online - regarding the privacy issues the same as banking privacy issues.

I fix my own guns, for the most part - but YMMV, of course.

Um, no I haven't. Not aware of any that require registration to invoke the warranty. Not certain that I care.

I think most 'registrations' are merely ways the manufacturer can accumulate a database of
  • a) general demographics of the people who purchase their products to use for marketing, and
    b) specific contact information for 'product notices & updates' or basically targeted-advartising.
No real harm, but you may get annoying emails unless you check the 'do not contact me' box...

Someday I'll fix my computer so it doesn't log me out halfway through a post, and wind up with me posting twice...

The 1894 I just bought had a slip in it that said I had 5 days to mail it in if I want to have a warranty. Wanted the SN etc... I didn't do it. I know some other manufacturers will honor warranties even if you don't send the dumb thing in, except by manufacture date instead of date of purchase. I prefer to never register my firearms, not even with the manufacturer.

The only one I've registered with the manufacturer was my Krieghoff, and that was done through the mail to get the free hat :D . I wouldn't ever do it on line.

Why am I not surprised at this. Everything comes with a warranty registration card. I suppose they'll be keeping track of my kitchen appliances and electronic gadgets as well.

Registration, either internet or postcard, is not necessary for a warranty. Your receipt will do that. Want some magazine solicitations? Send that card in right away.

Interesting thoughts on this. :)
I for one thought it to be a good idea by virtue that I am not the original owner.
I figured if by chance there ever would be a recall for any reason, an email from the manufacture would be a very quick and efficient way of contact.

You must register your Cobra products in order to validate your warranty or receive support from Cobra Enterprises.

It cant hurt I dont think, as Casa mentioned it'll let them know how to reach you in case of a recall. But I believe they must honor the warrenty regardless of registration. Personally I'v never bothered but thats just me.

And, in Canada, they've already learned their lesson about "registration". The fools here need to pay attention.

Here I thought I was paranoid. I dont think we are talking about anything different that registering a new Skill saw with the manufacturer or any other appliance. Why worry about the net when you already proclaimed to the Feds that you bought the gun and supplied the pertinent info on the Federal forms?

The Canadian thing is an entirely different animal.

Same thing with me for my Springfield M1A - but I got a free scope out of doing it! :D Figured that it was already registered when I had to fill out the $#%&@ing federal form at the gun shop where I purchased it.

I register all of my new guns with the manufacturer - and nearly all via the internet. It sure helps when I need to get a replacement part or accessory later on, and it certainly helps if I actually need a repair covered by warranty. As far as tracking my guns; I don't think registering them with the manufacturer has any consequence what so ever. They don't know if I still possess the gun or not and they have no way of knowing. I can't count the amount of guns that I've bought new, registered the warranty with the maker, had a factory repair, and then sold the gun two weeks later.

Heck, Ruger probably thinks my house is full of their handguns because of all the used guns I've bought and sent to them for warranty work. Marlin probably has a pretty good record as well - just from guns that I've sent for repair.

I think there is a benefit to registering new firearms with the manufacturer for warranty work, so I do it.

As far as registering and tracking for Big Brother goes, that's an all together different issue. And let's be honest about this for a second; if big brother wants to know what you own, he'll simply trace the posts on this board right back to your computer and he'll know. If you posted pictures of your guns and described your safe and storage area he'll even know exactly where to find them. Laws and the Constitution are the only thing that protects you at the moment, but if Big Brother goes rogue he's already got all the information he needs.

I don't mean to be a smart ***, but aren't you having more than your share of bad luck with new guns? I bought several new guns last year and none had to go back to the factory.

I've had pretty good luck with most of my new guns. But occasionally, especially if they are marked "Colt," I've had to send one back. I got a bolt action recently that needed a magazine follower replaced and a Marlin that needed a "hitch" in the action "unhitched." But for the most part, I've bought and received good guns right out of the box. I've sent numerous used guns in for factory repair though and have had good success with them. You may have mistaken me for someone else posting here.

I have to agree with IDIOT!!!

I am as much a conspiracy enthusiast as anyone else,.... but there are limits, even for me. 8)

I have only done this once,.... with a S&W revolver that ran close to a grand, and I didn't want any back talk if I wanted customer service. I have called S&W about the piece on a few occasions and it was nice when they putered my name, my piece and its registration came up which greatly effected their attitude, imo.

I look at these types of info gathering games as an evil necessity, that , if everyone did it in great numbers, would blind the info gatherers like the great flocks of migrating birds do to their predators!!! 8)

You don't NEED to register for any warranty. As long as you have a dated sales receipt. Those warranty cards and on line registration are just information gathering.
