winchester 94 30-30 sightting in question
evening guys, been a scoped guy for LONG TIME just got 2 winchester 94's 30-30 one 1951 with OLD WEAVER post scope on it, and a winchester 1894 30-30 src made in 1919.
question is whats a good way to site the ol src in at around 75 yards which is the longest shot ill have from stand to the feeder, guessing put the top of the sight under the bull like" pumpkin on the post" at say 50 see where she hits and go from there?

Were I sighting it in, I'd sight it in to hit just on top of the front sight with a 6:00 hold at 100 yards. That way if the rare longer than normal shot appeared you'd be good for it.donniedee wrote:evening guys, been a scoped guy for LONG TIME just got 2 winchester 94's 30-30 one 1951 with OLD WEAVER post scope on it, and a winchester 1894 30-30 src made in 1919.

Hold dead on. Trajectory is only +.5" at 50 if sighted in at 100.donniedee wrote:makes since joe, thanks, ill try a bright orange bull at 100yrds, and see where she hits how low would you hold at 50 if sighted at 100? 2in?
Plus if sighted in at 100 it's only -7.7" at 200.
That's for 150gr Winchester ammo.
The 170gr ammo is +.6" at 50 and -9.0 at 200.
I suspect other brands ( Hornady gummy tips excluded ) and factory equivalent hand loads would have similar trajectories.

Send me that old one, it might be bad.....I will work on sighting it in for you, shouldn't take more than a couple of years, then I will let you know....

Re: winchester 94 30-30 sightting in question
I zero mine to drop the bullet on the top, center edge of front sight at 200 yards with 150 grain WW Power Points. I have found that 34.0 of H4895 under a 150 grain Sierra flatpoint will duplicate that load for all intents and purposes (not to mention porpoises) and shoot to the same POI. Credit to Hobie for putting me onto that load.
This is my guns, my hold etc....YMMV.

I ,like Joe, sight in to put the bullet just at the top of the front sight at 100 yd. with a .30-30. I hold the bead/post higher on the animal if at longer range. Around here average shots on Deer are less than 50yd.

For your old gun and a bead front sight (is it????), I'd cover the target with your bead at 75. For some reason I can't do 6 o'clock holds with my bead sighted rifles but can with my flat post sight handguns.
BTW, has anybody chrono'd factory 150gr fodder out of 20" barrels? List FPS on factory loads is 2390 which seems way high to me.

2390fps is achieved with 24" test barrels. It is a bit high for a 20" carbine.L_Kilkenny wrote:For your old gun and a bead front sight (is it????), I'd cover the target with your bead at 75. Old Savage did these chronograph tests a couple years ago:
This might help a bit.Chronograph Velocities of 150gr 30-30 factory
ammo in real guns.
I have recently chronographed Federal PowerShok 150s in three Winchester 30-30s:
2350 fps in the 20" barrel
2407 fps in the 24" barrel
2467 fps in the 26" barrel
And, Winchester PP 150's:
2244 fps in the 20" barrel
2349 fps in the 24" barrel
2430 fps in the 26" barrel
Those are averages.
Some folks a while back were interested in the comparisons of 30-30 velocities in the various barrel lengths.
Joe the Federal 170s were at 2105 fps avg and the Win PP 170s were at 2041 fps avg in the 20" barrel.

Thanks for the info Joe and Old Savage. It's higher than I thought it would be. I was thinkin around 2150 for 150's outta a 20" barrel.
Thanks again,
Chris
