Not levergun, but old firearm-Model 12 shotgun

Post by ChuckKY »

I have recently bought a Model 12 and feel as if I need to give it a good cleaning. This is the first model 12 I have ever had and am not really familiar with taking it apart. I have taken the trigger assembly out and put it back in, the spring steel shell holder surprised me when it fell out, but it was easy to figure out. I would like to buff out the bolt and would rather not have any surprises trying to remove it. Does the barrel assembly need to be on or off, if on does the bolt need to be unlocked before removing trigger assembly? Anything that you guys think I need to know would be greatly appreciated. I am not totally helpless, but have learned the hard way before that it is easier to ask questions of more knowing sources than always trying to figure out what just happened on your own. The shot gun is a 1939 16 gauge field grade if it makes any differance. Thanks in advance for any help and patience with me....Chuck

Chuck, Good choice, I have several mod.12`s
My 20 ga. is the go to field gun.

I have taken them down in the past but would have to have the gun in hand and be taking it apart to be able to tell you.
I have always removed the barrel assy first. then the butt stock. then the trigger assy. the bolt will tip out. A little tricky. Maybe you should look on line for a step by step.

One of these would be a great help. :D

1) http://www.americanrifleman.org/Article ... 550&cid=12

2) Google "winchester model 12 disassembly"... you'll find what you need if the above article (last couple of paragraphs) doesn't do you....

Glad it worked for you.... there's a ton of good info on the NRA's American Rifleman site...

When I was a lad, I turned down a chance at a Model 12 in 16ga with the polychoke installed. 35 Dollars..... *sigh*
