Hornady to drop Light and Heavy Magnum ammo
and replace it with their Super Performance ammo which will provide same velocity with lower pressures, less recoil, and at a lower price!

All this is well documented in the current NRA American Rifleman, an article that is well worth reading.

Re: Hornady to drop Light and Heavy Magnum ammo
They're not offering the new stuff in .444 Marlin or .45-70 as they did in their Light Magnum ammo. Hornady's LeveRevolution ammo in those two calibers isn't good enough to keep me as a Hornady customer. Sooooooo, for me, those two calibers will be handloads only from now on.

Re: Hornady to drop Light and Heavy Magnum ammo
I wish they wouldn't. They are now trying to turn our favorite short range brutes into marginal long range "deer" rifles. Now don't get me wrong, I like new stuff and improvement, but not at the expense of the tried and true.
I've started stocking up on their light/mag stuff a while back anticipating they might do this. I sure hope Marlin doesn't decide to start fazing out their traditional leverguns for their XLR stuff. It seems to be a trend we've seen with Ruger and Hornady, and I hope no others. Have you noticed that there are very few wood stocked/blue barreled Remingtion bolt actions gracing the store shelves nowadays? Most of what I see are black plastic or some other foreign material with rubber inserts surrounding polished stainless steel. Remember when all rifles came with iron sights, then we got raised combs that made the iron sights worthless, and then the iron sights were gone? Shoot! I still drink Folger's coffee.
Oh, and before I forget, all these new things come with the sales pitch that the new stuff "will provide same velocity with lower pressures, less recoil, and at a lower price!" Seem's I've been hearing a lot of that lately.

Re: Hornady to drop Light and Heavy Magnum ammo
That's a pretty significant advancement in propelant technology. That's really going to help keep the 458 Winchester and perhaps even the legendary 375 H&H alive too. Very strange they overlooked the 45-70. Maybe they are already using the new type of powder in their Leverevolution line????
I wish I could get my mitts on these new powders for handloading!

Tutt;
Yes, the current powder evolved from the powders used for the Leverevolution and Marlin .300 and .338 ammo.
This is a very detailed article that inlcudes the powder history, whys and wherefores, graphs, and tables - good stuff for the ammo nut and reloaders.
Surely you are a member of the NRA and your American Rifleman will soon arrive!

Take the "Hunter" magazine not the "Rifleman" magazine.
How about scanning and posting the article you are talking about.
EDIT:
Nevermind -- Here's the link. Would've been a good idea to include this in your OP.

EDIT: Maybe this will work too.

CRS, it's probably waiting for me at home! Been on the road for the holidays and I'm not very good about checking my mail even when I am home!

Re: Hornady to drop Light and Heavy Magnum ammo
Dang, this article makes me want to toy around with blending propellants or making duplex loads! Don't worry guys, I won't do it.
I really need to get a copy of Quick Load someday so I can further develope loads, particularly with non-lead monocore bullets.

Cant wait to find out the specs on their 150 gr gmx 30-30 ammo. I applaud hornady for not sitting still and constantly trying to improve !!!! For sure i will try their new ammo !

Re: Hornady to drop Light and Heavy Magnum ammo
Well good riddens to that Light mag stuff....it wasn't especially accurate, or that much faster. Lightened your wallet in a hurry though....LOL !
The regular Hornady custom ammo is aces....very consistant. Time will tell............
Thanks, Tom

Thanks, Tom

Re: Hornady to drop Light and Heavy Magnum ammo
Cementhead - rifle accuracy can be veryiable with different ammo.
My daughter's .243 loves the 100 grain light magnum and her best 5 shot group was 3/8 inch center to center.
My W M70 featherweight .308 loves it and shoots 150 and 165 grain bullets into an inch or less.
My wifes Ruger 77 .243 does not like it , but shoots Winchester 100 grainers into 3/4 inches.
Go figure.

Re: Hornady to drop Light and Heavy Magnum ammo
Their old stuff was a joke. I could meet or beat everything they had with off the shelf items. Their "high BC" pointy things are a joke also. Sorry for being a skeptic but I've already got 60 years of smoke up my butt. There isn't room for any more. Besides, who in the world would want to drive a Hornady bullet fast. Weatherby ammo got a bad rep by hitching themselves to that dim star.

That old stuff never did much for me either. Now, if they would come out with some ammo that would add a little to the 300 Savage. AJ
Re: Hornady to drop Light and Heavy Magnum ammo
Interesting comment on your Ruger 77. I have a Ruger 77V in 6mm that will not shoot Hornady 100 grainers either. But with Noslers or Speer it does fine. Im not really a fan of Hornady bullets in general for hunting with the exception of my 45-70 Marlin lever. It really likes the 350 grain FPs and has done for several Nebraska white tails.crs wrote:Cementhead - rifle accuracy can be veryiable with different ammo.

I believe these technologies are just in response to the
newest and amazing Reloder-17 and also
Hogdons HPV1000 Hybred ? or whatever they call it.
If your cartridge is suited for RL-17 burn speed, nothing
else can touch it
