Best value in a quality low power scope?
I am looking for a low power scope for a Marlin 336. Preferably a variable power, like a 1-4X, or 1.5-5X. I'd like a 20mm lens, so it isn't bulky, and perhaps I can get away with low rings...Anyone have any suggestions?

Straight 2.5x or 1-4x Leupolds are great. My pick of all the choices. If you like Weaver they have the little V3 (1-3x) for short $$$. They're nice, however a little short on the eye relief (3").
Thanks, Tom

Re: Best value in a quality low power scope?
I have the Weaver 1-3x and it's about the lightest there is, and I had it on a 336 with the low Weaver rings. I have it on my 1894c right now.
I'm not really a scope man, but it's very natural to look through and very quick on target.
Eye relief was right for mounting in the normal place, it's not really a scout scope.
Price is good, about $150, sometimes Midway has it on sale, so I would call it a good value.

Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5x32 is $65.00 to your door on Amazon. They are great scopes.

The Weaver 1-3 is a great scope for a Levergun. If you want to step up a notch the 1-4x20 Leupold is also a favorite of mine. I consider it a good value, though not an inexpensive scope.
The little Bushnell is a good scope too, but their bulky looking to me and just don't look right on a levergun.

The Weaver Classic V3, 1-3x20 - +3 ! !
I have two of them, bought new several years ago.
They have proven to be bright, reliable and lightweight.
They were/are also inexpensive.
My 1st cost $99.95, and the 2nd cost $139.95.
I bought them both at a discount online optics dealer, who is currently listing them @ $149.95

Another vote for the Weaver V3.
Also look at the Burris 4x Timberline for about the same money.

My vote is for any straight power Simmons with my favorite being the 4x Pro-Diamond. I have two of them and four Simmons scopes in total.

Oh yeah ! The 3-9 x 40 version looks like a perfect complement to my modestly priced WBY Vanguard

I've had very good service from Weaver, Nikon and Burris scopes. Also, the new Redfields look promising.
And don't discount a good used Leupold.

+1, also like the Simmons', and older Weavers.Swampman wrote:Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5x32 is $65.00 to your door on Amazon. They are great scopes.
I even have a $59 BSA 3-9x 'shorty' scope that is very compact and seems to hold up. It has the 'illuminated reticle' feature, but I never bothered to put the battery in, since I don't really need that feature.

+3 or so, especially the Dusk to Dawn series with the 6" eye relief.336A wrote:Another vote for the Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5x32mm.
Re: Best value in a quality low power scope?
Count this as another vote for the Weaver V3 !! I've had one mounted on a .44 1894, 336ER and BLR in .358. The eye relief was adequate on all those rifles. Another scope a tad more expensive that also works well on my 1895/45-70 and on a BLR is the Leupold SG VXI 1-4x20 with HD reticle. No problems with the shorter parallax setting, actually it's likely better figuring the typical ranges they are used for. Both are great little scopes, but I do prefer the HD reticle.

Re: Best value in a quality low power scope?
I vote for the Weaver V3. I bought one this year and put in on a 1894 in .357. It's a neat little scope. I've never had a 1x power scope, and it's amazing how fast you can get on target and shoot with it set on 1x. Now I understand why they put low power scopes on dangerous game rifles. I think it's a sweet little scope for the money.
