The last time I posted a "New Member" post I never went back to the forum. I posted about my best shot with mt Winchester 30-30 and they called me a liar. Every single one of them; all for different reasons. I mean, it is bad enough with my signature, some people just don't like a lever gun out-doing their bolt actions.

I am hoping since this site is geared toward lever action rifles, I will be able to avoid that bias. I can avoid it for the most part on one other site; but they still treat me as an outcast since they are bolt action lovers.

I want to post a video but I'll wait until I see what the water is like here.

Let me just say that I love my Winchester and it shoots a lot better than most give lever guns credit for... Especially with the Hornady FTX bullets!

Welcome from the great white north. People find it easier to believe if you say 1.74" instead of .58MOA.

Welcome. We prefer leverguns, but you'll find conversation and experience here that covers the gamut from handguns to rifles and everything inbetween. We had a thread not too long ago on cannons. The members here are a special lot. If you stick around you'll find that out pretty quick. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Welcome. I haven't been here too long but this has become the board I spend the most time on simply because the people here are friendly and helpful. That and I love lever guns.

Greetings & Salutations! Welcome!

So... tell us about that .58 MOA 300-yard group! That must have been what... a little under 1.75"?

I have no difficulty believing you achieved it with a levergun, and I'd love to hear more! Do you regularly shoot that well? I ask because I certainly do not!!!

Lots of incredibly knowledgeable folks here, and lots of civilized discourse...

His rifle appears to be one of the Winchester Rangers from about ten years ago. Rifleman, how do you manage the high scope mounts? I've always had difficulty shooting with them. BTW, Welcome to Leverguns!
Winchester M94 30-30 (1980)
Winchester M70 Westerner 30-06 (1982)
Winchester M1 Garand (1942)
Too many others to list - hope to add more levers soon.

Welcome,.... and I am intrigued as Haycock. Was that a one time group, or something your rifle consistently produces? Are you rolling your own or what?

Rifleman,

Welcome to the forum. You will find we are shooters and hunters with many varied firearm interests. As for your .58 MOA group .... I can do that too .... at 7 yards   .

Seriously we know lever guns can shoot and in the right hands shoot very well. About the only thing you might get ribbed about here is your choice of carrying handles. Most of us don't use big fancy ones.

Glad you joined. Now feel free to post your video and any pics you want and tell us all about it.

Welcome to a great bunch of lvergun shooters. There are some long range shooters here that can make the old 30-30 do what it's capable of. You'll fit right in real fine.

It was 1 3/4", I just left it at .58 instead of .5833333... for ease. :)

I do shoot that well at this time. I have only shot 2 groups with that rifle while scoped. The .58moa group was done with 168gr A-Max bullets, (I don't recommend using A-Maxs in lever actions.) With the FTX bullets I shoot .64moa at 300 yards.

I've only shot 5 groups with the 30-30 ever. The first was about 9 months ago, at 100 yards without a scope resulted in 3 inches at 100 yards, that was using factory ammo. The second was at 200 yards using factory ammo and iron sights resulting in 5 inches.
About 6 months ago I started hand-loading and got pretty good at it and got a 2.5" group at 300 yards with iron sights using the FTX bullets. That I think was more luck than anything, but you could imagine how pumped I was!

It is when I got my scope that I really was able to hit. After load development with the 168gr A-max, I shot the 300 yard .58moa group. I was trying different bullets one day and dropped one that had a 110gr V-max, when it hit the floor the bullet drove itself into the case all the way to the powder. That day was when I decided to use cannelure bullets for everything, I didn't want that to happen at the inopportune time. So I started using the Hornady FTX and after load development, got a .64moa group at 300 yards. That is what I will use as long as they are available.

My best was at .58moa at 300 yards for a while with both my rifles, one being a Howa 30-06. It wasn't until a few days ago i broke the barrier with the Hornady 190gr SPBT, .50moa at 300 yards. So I think my rifles shoot better than I do and I am just starting to get better.

Here is my lever gun secret. Don't tell anyone!

Most of the people that shoot tight groups use free floated barrels, which aid in consistency when the barrel heats. Since I can't figure a way to free float my lever action, I don't shoot again until the barrel is cool. Or as cool as it was when I made the first shot.

I shoot a shot, eject the case then leave the action open while I go check and mark the hit. If it is hot out and the sun is beating down on the barrel, when I get back to my bench I run a wet patch of bore cleaner down the bore, then run a dry one down it.
Basically, every time I shoot that rifle, it is a cold bore shot.

If I don't do it that way, the bands holding the magazine and forearm will not let the barrel expand freely as a free floated barrel would.

If I am not load developing and testing the accuracy, I only shoot one shot anyway. Almost every day I shoot one of my guns, usually only one shot unless it is one of my pistols.

This is a Winchester 94 Ranger that I bought 30 years ago at K Mart for $150. I have no idea why it is different, but I like it being different! :)

I also want to thank everyone for the warm welcome! I feel right at home!

I just open my mouth a bit. :O

I was shooting the same exact groupings out of my new Howa 30-06 for a time. I really don't notice anything different, I just seem to take anything the weather or what have I, in stride.

I was racking my brain trying to figure out what was meant about the "carrying handle" until I seen the "on top". :P

I needed something to get me further than 400 yards, the Bushnell Elite 3200 was the cheapest scope that came highly recommended.

Speaking of 'carrying handles' - I realized I like the higher 'see-through' rings from Weaver that mount using the scope-mount-holes, not just due to the 'see-through' feature, but ALSO because I like a higher line of sight than many folks. After puzzling on it, I realized I'm generally not a 'cheek-weld' shooter, but rather a 'chin-weld' shooter, at least if given a choice. I suppose using a scope on my .22's as a kid set me up for that.

Anyway, I wondered what your experience has been with high vs. low scope positioning?

To tell you the truth, I really don't have a preference. I've had the Bushnell on my Winchester since August and love it.

There are only two things I don't like about the Nikko Stirling on my Howa, the recticle has a crystal in the center whereas a laser hits it for low light conditions; it is a little big and I can't get as precise as I want.
Another thing that isn't really the scopes fault, the butt pad on the Howa is too spongy which allows the scope to touch my head.
Other than those two problems, which isn't a problem really, I love that one too.
