New Here and to Lever Guns!

Post by BoxxerBoyDrew »

Hello Everyone,

I am Drew, and I live in Central Texas in the Waco Area. I have been Hunting and Shooting all my Life, but the only Lever Gun I ever had was a Red Rider! :D I am Married and have 1 15yo Son! I have been into T/C Contenders for Years, and I have just gotten my first Lever Rifle. It is a Glenfield Model30 in 30-30Win. It was my Great Uncles who passed away in September. He bought it new in 1970, and it was his truck gun. The finish has been pretty much worn off, but the metal and wood are in good shape! It has the Glenfield 4x thin wire ret. scope that came on the rifle 39 years ago! :D I haven't been able to shoot it YET, but it will be going to the range this week!

I am going to test it with some cheap-o ammo from Wally World, but I plan to reload for it, and I have asked a few guys from Specialty Pistols about what Cast bullet they like in their 30-30s and most said the Lyman 311291. Which is a 170gr RnGc bullet. Has anyone here tried that bullet? If not what do Yall cast and shoot in Your 30-30s?

I am sure I will have plenty of Questions for Yall, so please be patient with me! So far I really LOVE Yalls site, and have learned quite a bit just looking over the site today!

Well Thank You in advance for any help, and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
Drew

:D Welcome to the camp fire BoxxerBoyDrew. You can't go wrong with a 30-30. I don't shoot lead in mine however someone will be along to help out.

Thanks, Tom

Drew,

Welcome to the fire. I think you'll find that rifle is your opening into a whole new world. I have a few Contender barrels myself and understand the attraction and how the two firearm forms are related. You'll enjoy it here.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Hello Drew. Welcome to the group. My only question is what took you so long to get a levergun. I must have been mistaken with the assumption that every guy in Texas was given one at birth. :P Anyhow, I'm not only glad you got one, but that you intend to shoot cast bullets as well. Way to Go! What I use (and I'm sure others will chime in with the same) is the Lyman 311041, cataloged at 173 grains. It's a flatnose, gascheck bullet that, once you get it loaded into a case, bears a strong resemblance to lots of factory rounds except for being cast as opposed to jacketed. If I just want to plink a bit, I use a non-gascheck 311008, which has that similar 30-30 flatnose contour, at around 115 grains more or less--a great plinker with Unique powder. The latter is a bullet originally intended for the 32-20, but can be sized a little smaller, and is an almost-recoil-free, very accurate option for plinking and game smaller than deer (although I would imagine that there are those that have used it successfully on deer as well).

Good luck.

BoxxerBoyDrew,

Welcome to the forum. Glad you made it.

Loading for the 30-30 is very easy. There are hundreds of good loads for it out there and most of them work acceptably. I don't shoot lead from my Winchesters as a rule, but thanks to forum member LeverBob who sent me some samples I have some loaded for the next range trip.
My favorite load for the 30-30 is a full sized case, WLP primer, 34.5grs of Win 748, and a 150gr bullet of your rifles choice. I've shot this load in around 14 or so 30-30s and it's worked great in all of them.

Take care,

Joe

Welcome!

My first levergun was a Glenfield .30-30 and I bought it in Waco oddly enough.

Try 150gr Remington Core-Lokts.

And! Use! Less! Exclamation! Points!

Drew...Glad you made the trail home. Prepare to fall in love. 'Cause you will pard!

31141 or the LEE 170 gr. cast have been the best for me. If you're up against bigger stuff than deer, the RCBS 180 gr. casts out about 190 grs. with WW's. It's possible to put a flat point on the boolit with your lubrisizer on the LEE 200 gr. & use it in the .30 WCF. You have to use the LEE crimp die or (a trade secret) use a .300 Savage crimp die (LEE) for a case neck stab crimp.

Oh Lord...so much to share...Drew, you'll be bug-eyed by the time you finish all the posts about the 94' Winny & cast shooting. JMillers posts about it will give you a masters degree in '94ology. Then you get to start on Griff, Grizz and the others.

Yep...you'll be forever changed.

WOW!

Thanks for all of the greatings and info on cast bullets! I will get a few pics posted soon, as I know no post is complete without pics!

I have used my Dads Marlin 336 for Years when riding the farm on the 4wheeler, but the Glenfield is the first on I have owned. I plan on getting a few more as Time and Money allow! I would like to get 1 in 44mag, as I have a 12" 44mag Contender barrel, and I love shooting it! Also a used Henry 22mag has been calling my name down at the local gun shop, and if it is still there after Christmas I might just bring it home. I have ALWAYS wanted a Lever Gun, but I always spent my extra cash on Contender stuff before finding the Lever gun I wanted. But that won't be a problem anymore, as the Lever Bug has bitten me pretty hard! Once I get the Glenfield up and going I WILL be getting another to add to a few empty slots in my Gun Safe.

Well again THANKYOU for the Warm Welcome and info, and Yall will see me here quite a bit from now on!
Take Care and MerryChristmas!
Drew
