If Christmas had a flavor.

Post by Gobblerforge »

Tastes and smells can bring such a vivid memory to so many points in our lives. What about Christmas? In my home, in my mind, it's always been the eggnog. Something I've loved and made my entire adult life and was taught by my father, who made it when I was young. The recipe is pretty simple but was only made around the holidays and boy it's rich. Almost certainly it's made Christmas eve and Christmas day. Maybe in the morning and maybe after dinner too.
So what's in store for Christmas in your house that'll bring in the holidays with one taste or whiff? Ginger bread men, eggnog, the smell of pine or the taste of cinnamon and whiskey?
Gobbler
Gobbler's Eggnog.
For a one gallon batch.
In a small bowl mix a half dozen eggs and a splash of vanilla extract and a good shake or two of nutmeg nice and smooth.
In a large bowl chop and mix a half gallon vanilla ice cream with a half gallon milk and a cup or so of sugar until the lumps of ice cream get down to marble size. Then slowly pour the beaten eggs into the mixer's blades as the eggnog gets mixed down to lumpy milkshake consistency.
Sprinkle a light touch of nutmeg to the slight foam that should be floating on top. Serve in your favorite Santa cup with friends and loved ones.
That's what Christmas tastes like.

Never had that, so I'll take your word for it. To me it tastes like Black Walnut Pie with whipped cream and a mug of hot cider to wash it down.

For me it might be cloves and cinnamon mixed into the hot apple cider.

The smell of gunpowder. Through my formative years during the holidays we'd end up shooting.

Now, if you had said "smells", then I'd have to say Hoppe's No 9. Some of the best Christmas memories I have of my brothers and late father, were when one of us got a new gun... Of course, we ALL had to shoot it!

But for flavors....................................

Guess my avatar says it all!

Myers Jamaican Rum. We buy a bottle every year and the better half makes rum balls and gives them to some neighbors (of course we have some too). Mmmmmm!

Would have to be the smell of tamales steaming on mom's stove Christmas morning...

Yeah, I'm hungry too now. All your fault guys! LOL

Here at home I'd say cinnamon, pine, turkey, hot chocolate, Patron, real wood (preferably oak) in the fireplace, and everything being cooked.

My Great Grandparents used the fireplace and wood stove to heat their home, and we ate Christmas dinner there every year. In their memory, I think our fireplace has become part of Christmas.

White Castle hamburgers. Nothing else open on Christmas Day. Pretty good, though.

Folks who own & frequent kosher delis left Detroit 25 years ago. Gotta drive miles & miles for kosher now.

Great stuff You're right about that.

I get lamb tallow for making lube from a halal butcher in Eastern Market. Hard to get out of there -- they all want to talk about guns & their military service overseas. Good place to pick up AK advice. Right conservative/ pro American folk. But we drift afar from subject to pic.

Flavors: my mother-in-law's cornbread, her chess pie, her sage dressing made from herbs grown outside her kitchen door.
