Ok what can you tell me about the saddle and horse.

Pony knows his business. Saddle looks like some of the Meanea/Frazer types. but could have come from AZ instead. The Original-style "Cheyenne Roll" kinda give it away...

A guess but the pony is keeping the rope tight on the steer intentionally?

I'm surprised he doesn't have a back cinch on that saddle, what with the kind of force that horse/cow combination can exert on the horn. It looks like the rear skirt is coming up a couple inches, but I've seen the rear of the saddle come up a lot further than that with enough forward force on the horn.

Those old centerfire saddles didn't need a flank cinch, and they do tend to stay put better, but a horse needs some whithers for them to work right.

I'd use a neck rope on the horse so he can't face away from what's happening. I know a couple of local cowboys who roped calves to treat them, momma cow charged the horse, the horse took off for home, dragging to death the calf on the end of the rope.

Interesting photo. That is a very fancy saddle for an everyday cowboy. He is dressed a little different that the run of the mill cowboy too. Cheyenne silver mounted saddle, single cinch, foot on steer, this could be a more of a showman than a ranch working cowboy. Just my two cents.

That horse knows his job,those long tapaderos are great for scrub country and the flat horn looks southwest but Buck mentioned the cantle with Cheyenne roll so it could have come from any place. Any idea as to a date?

I live and ride here in AZ, I own two ponies and ride every day. I am a Southwest history buff too. Not only does the saddle horn configuration bespeak a Southwest origin, bu so does the cowbpy's flat brim hat.

I can't hardly tell, but it looks like he's packing. Most cowboys don't get down and work cattle packing a piece on their hip unless they expect trouble. At least in my experience.

On the ground is where things can really get western... Better to have that pistol with you than to leave it on the horse.

No matter how well-trained thay are, most ponies can't shoot for sour owl stuff...
