I did not sin this time,it was a lever........lucky me

Post by Boreman »

I walked into my favorite pawn shop Monday afternoon( I shouldn't have) and what did my wondering eyes see hanging on the wall but a M-88 in,as it turned out, 308 Winchester.I did some SN checking and it turns out to be a pre 64' model made in 1959. It has a nice Nikon Monarch 2x-7x scope in a Weaver on piece steel base on top. It followed me home yesterday.I mentioned this purchase to a friend who is a gun buff I work with at Habitat for Humanity on Wednesday.Today during break he hands me a M-88 clip he no longer needed. He had sold his M-88 a good while ago,but still had the extra clip. It was a truly LUCKEY day. No pics yet.I am working on it............... ???????

Christmas came early...good find, Ron! Just goes to show wandering a little now and then can pay off. (No, Tiger, you can't use that line!) The pre-64 Win 88 is a fine lever action rifle. I'm looking forward to your pics and a range report.

The model 88 in .308 was a favorite of one of my old friends, who passed away last year after living his whole life in the same town in which he was born. He used to hunt on my grandfather's farm, in the same town, quite often. You'd see him carrying that or a model 95 Winchester in 30-40 Krag. You lucked out. The Model 88 didn't really suffer from any re-engineering by Winchester in 1964, except for maybe that impressed-checkering you find on the stocks. It's a complicated, but very well made rifle throughout its production. Good luck with it. You'll probably find out that it more than likely shoots as well as most bolt actions. Merry Christmas.

Have you priced the clip for the M-88 which is the same as the model 100 semi auto?

I think they go for $50 or more.

You got a double score!

Boreman you are one blessed dude...My mothers main rifle was one just like you describe. a Pre-64 Mdl. 88 in .308 Winny. A range day for her was one shot if the rifle was still sighted in...offhand at 200 yrds. That made Pa madder than a newly castrated bull. He wanted her to shoot some groups... I don't think she ever shot more than once for any game.

I shot her rifle many times, it was a real revelation for a young lad just starting out. I hope you really use your rifle to put some history on it. What a find!
