Rumor has it that the F-22 Raptor can hit mach 2.85. I don't doubt it, that jet can supercruise, meaning not using afterburner, at mach 1.87.

The XB70 Valkyrie was an aircraft way ahead of it's time. There were only two made and one of them was lost in a crash. A lot of the technology developed for in went into the F-111 and B1, which in the "A" model was a speed demon too. My ex worked on the B1's for twenty years, very impressive bird.

Neat post.

All those fast movers are cool. The old F4 Phantom wasn't much behind them, either. What scares me more than any of them is when an F10 Warthog suddenly appears overhead and lights you up, tips sideways and spins around as if that wing were planted in the earth as a pivot pin, and whips away in another direction at 250 m.p.h. and all at about 30 feet above the tree tops. That impresses me as a former Infantry Grunt.

I vote for the A-10 and AC-130 as the world all time coolest aircraft. How can you go wrong with large guns strapped to an airframe?

I always thought the Sopwith Camel, P-38 Lightning, and H-34 Choctaw were the coolest. These just interest me.

1. P-51D Mustang - Hands-down winner. (aircraft porn, baby...)
2. P-38 Lightning - close second (4 .50's and a 20mm? Oh yeahhhhh.......)
3. F-4 Phantom - close 3rd (big, ugly, fast, and will kill you in a heartbeat....)
4. A-10 Warthog - (2 words.....Avenger cannon....)
5. Spitfire (more aircraft porn....)

Catching the pattern here?? Only OLD aircraft are cool. I love watching the F-22, -15, -18, and such as much as the next guy, but none of them can hold a candle in the "coolness" category as those 5 right there.

The Warthogs were really cool to watch in Desert Storm, however "Puff" is my favorite. Hands down. After seeing first hand in Somalia how they operate...I revere them.

Thanks, Tom

Doug,
I was CX Flight ME for the last two years before the layoffs hit. You know Galen Hensiek, Les Johnson, Leon Whittaker, or any of the other CX crew? Last I heard, the blockpoint is back on for the old CX, though at one time they were going to make it obsolete. But there is still a demand for the old gal out there...so they are back on with a block point currently..though it will be scaled down from the original plan.....PM me and I'll give more details on what WAS slated for blockpoint when I left earlier this year. I won't post it on the board...

Actually, the F-107 was faster than the F-111. But few people even know the F-107 existed.

As a kid growing up in the 1950's living near a large AFB (Eglin), I followed the progression of military jets as they came along and I read of the exploits of the X-15 as it set new records throughout the 50's. Of the military jets back then, the F-104 Starfighter was my favorite: Image

That Top 10 list stops at the SR-71 Blackbird for me. Although they may be "aircraft", any bird that has to be piggy backed into the air and lands on a glide path is not an "airplane" in my book.

Speaking of the SR-71, I heard somewhere that it was originally designated as the RS-71. It became the SR-71 because Lyndon Johnson mistakenly called it that during the press conference where he announced the airplane to the world, so instead of embarrassing LBJ the military hastily renamed it (at a cost of several million dollars to change all of the literature).

Gotta love the F-104. My Dad worked on the 2 seat version in Puerto Rico when I was born. One of his jets is now in the Pima Air Museum in AZ.

We use to joke that the Germanys loved the 104......there was one in every back yard.

Yes, they had a reputation of having "unique" flight characteristics. They weren't called "a missile with a seat in it" for no reason. I read that the Germans would disable the stick shaker that warned of an impending stall. Glide ratio? We don't need no stinkin' glide ratio!

Now that depends on how fast the bowling ball was rotating! Enough back spin and the bowling ball would beat it 2 or 3 to 1!
